Shigeru Miyamoto Discusses Star Fox’s Fox McCloud Cameo in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Nintendo’s iconic character creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, recently participated in a series of interviews marking the global cinematic launch of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The film, produced in collaboration with Illumination and now showing in theaters worldwide, has garnered widespread attention not only for its adaptation of Nintendo’s stellar space platformer but also for the inclusion of notable guest characters from across the company’s storied franchises.

Of particular interest to long-time Nintendo fans is the surprise appearance of Fox McCloud, the protagonist of the beloved Star Fox series.

This unexpected crossover has sparked discussions about how such a character cameo found its way into a movie centered around Mario and his galaxy-spanning adventure.

In conversations with major outlets, Miyamoto elaborated on this creative decision.

According to Miyamoto, the idea to include Fox McCloud originated from Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination and co-producer on the film.

Recounting the process, Miyamoto expressed that, "When Chris suggested incorporating elements from Star Fox, my initial reaction was cautious, since Nintendo tends to keep its intellectual properties separate, aside from minor exceptions like a Pikmin cameo.

However, with the film’s space setting, the concept intrigued me as the creator of Star Fox."

Miyamoto noted that despite his initial enthusiasm, he anticipated resistance from within Nintendo regarding the merging of distinct universes.

He initiated discussions and advocacy among colleagues, preparing for possible pushback.

"To my surprise," Miyamoto shared, "many team members saw great potential in the idea and were genuinely excited about the possibilities this crossover could offer."

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie marks a significant milestone for Nintendo’s involvement in cinematic projects, further cementing its presence beyond traditional gaming platforms like the Nintendo Switch and eShop.

The inclusion of characters like Fox McCloud not only pays homage to Nintendo’s rich history but also highlights the company’s willingness to celebrate its vibrant ecosystem of games and characters in new, creative formats.

Currently available in cinemas worldwide, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is poised to continue the trend of successful game-to-film adaptations, following in the footsteps of previous blockbusters while offering veteran fans delightful surprises and fresh content.

With Shigeru Miyamoto at the creative helm and a dynamic cast of Nintendo icons, the film stands as a testament to the enduring appeal and adaptability of Nintendo’s intellectual properties.
