How Fox McCloud Joined The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Insights from Nintendo and Illumination

Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie has captured the attention of both longtime fans and newcomers thanks to its innovative blend of beloved characters and cinematic storytelling.

Developed in partnership between Nintendo and Illumination—the studio renowned for animated blockbusters such as Despicable Me and The Super Mario Bros.

Movie—this highly anticipated film adaptation brings the vibrant universe of Mario to the silver screen, drawing on decades of gaming history and creative vision.

One of the film’s biggest surprises came with the inclusion of Fox McCloud, the iconic leader of the Star Fox team.

Long considered a standalone hero within Nintendo's roster, Fox's appearance marks a rare moment of crossover between major Nintendo franchises.

While the movie is known for its subtle cameos and Easter eggs, the addition of Fox McCloud was largely unexpected, even among dedicated fans who keep a close eye on every Nintendo Direct and announcement from the eShop.

In a recent interview highlighted by Forbes, Shigeru Miyamoto, legendary Nintendo designer and the creator of both the Mario and Star Fox series, shed light on how Fox McCloud found his way into this galactic adventure.

According to Miyamoto, the idea initially came from Illumination’s team, who saw narrative potential in integrating a character intrinsically tied to space.

Miyamoto explained that, while Nintendo typically refrains from blending intellectual properties—aside from brief Pikmin references—he was intrigued by the creative opportunity.

"When Chris [Meledandri, CEO of Illumination] presented the suggestion to include Star Fox, my inclination as the creator was to see what might happen, especially given the space setting of Mario Galaxy," Miyamoto recounted.

"Initially, I expected some resistance within Nintendo due to our usual policies, so I reached out to the necessary internal teams.

To my surprise, many colleagues were enthusiastic about the idea and eager to see how the crossover would work."

This collaboration demonstrates Nintendo’s evolving approach within the film industry, where cross-studio partnerships can open up fresh creative avenues.

While fans are well-accustomed to seeing franchises like Star Fox, Pikmin, and Mario thriving separately on hardware such as the Nintendo Switch and via content updates on the eShop, it’s rare to witness such a boldly executed crossover outside of the Super Smash Bros. series.

Now playing in theaters worldwide, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie marks another milestone in Nintendo's journey from interactive entertainment to blockbuster filmmaking.

As of its opening weekend, the film has drawn attention not just for its vibrant animation and faithful game references, but also for its willingness to surprise audiences—even longtime fans—with unexpected character appearances.

Although Miyamoto has clarified that no immediate plans are in place for a Super Smash Bros. film adaptation, the positive internal and public reception to Fox McCloud’s cameo could pave the way for further crossovers in future Nintendo and Illumination projects.
