Mina the Hollower DLC Update: Yacht Club Games Rules Out Free DLC, Sequel Plans Discussed

Yacht Club Games has clarified its stance on post-launch content for Mina the Hollower, saying free DLC is not something the studio will promise and that major paid expansions are not under active development.

The action-adventure title, developed by Yacht Club Games and available on Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo eShop, recently reached a sales milestone the studio announced, selling more than 300,000 copies.

Background

Mina the Hollower follows Yacht Club Games’ history with Shovel Knight, a project that began as a successful Kickstarter and grew over time with additional campaigns and updates.

Speaking to Kotaku, programmer David D’Angelo explained that the lessons from Shovel Knight’s development shaped how the studio approaches commitments today.

No free DLC promise

D’Angelo said the team will no longer promise free downloadable content, explaining that Yacht Club prefers to set a clear scope up front and deliver exactly what was pledged.

In journalistic terms: Yacht Club Games now avoids making open-ended promises about complimentary add-ons and intends to ship only content it has definitively planned and budgeted for.

DLC outlook

On the subject of larger DLC expansions, Yacht Club has not developed or even seriously discussed major add-on campaigns for Mina.

D’Angelo noted the base game itself is substantial and that the studio would need to evaluate technical and design challenges before considering any large-scale content additions.

For the moment, the studio has confirmed planned quality-of-life updates and a randomizer mode for the game, rather than full-scale DLC.

Sequel potential

While free DLC is off the table and major expansions aren’t in development, Yacht Club appears open to continuing Mina as a franchise.

D’Angelo indicated the team has ideas seeded within the game that could point toward a future Mina sequel, and that the studio regards Mina as a potential tentpole IP similar to Shovel Knight—something they may return to over time.

What this means for players

For Nintendo Switch owners, Mina the Hollower is complete as released, with smaller updates coming.

Yacht Club Games’ public comments make clear the studio prioritizes delivering promised content and avoiding the open-ended commitments that characterized parts of Shovel Knight’s post-launch lifecycle.
