Hilltop Works Releases First English Fan Translation of Mega Man Legends 2 Prologue

Hilltop Works Delivers English Fan Translation of Mega Man Legends 2 Prologue, Unlocking a Lost Capcom Classic For the first time, English-speaking Mega Man Legends enthusiasts have the opportunity to play the rare prologue to Mega Man Legends 2, thanks to the newly released fan translation by Hilltop Works.

The project brings a previously Japan-exclusive chapter of Capcom's legendary action-adventure series to a global audience, showcasing the dedication of the Mega Man community and the enduring appeal of this classic franchise. Mega Man Legends 2, known in Japan as Rockman Dash 2 - Episode 2: Ōinaru Isan, holds a unique position in Capcom’s lineage of action RPGs.

The Japanese release was accompanied by an exclusive prologue originally distributed as a bonus disc with the Mega Man Legends spin-off Tron ni Kobun, under the title Episode One: Roll-Chan Kiki Ippatsu.

This short yet significant adventure later became accessible as part of Capcom’s 2005 PSP port but remained untranslated for Western audiences until now. While fans have previously shared subtitled playthroughs and videos of the elusive prologue online, gameplay with full English text and dialogue support was unattainable—until the arrival of Hilltop Works' comprehensive fan patch.

The translation project, officially titled Mega Man Legends 2 Episode 1: Roll’s Close Call, not only offers English-speaking fans a chance to play this secret chapter but also unlocks developer-only content.

Players can explore the hidden developer debug room and the mysterious "Unreachable City," a location famously hinted at in marketing materials on the back of the original Mega Man Legends 2 box. The Hilltop Works team consists of passionate preservationists and fan translators: Hilltop oversaw hacking, editing, and graphics work; Cargodin managed localization tasks; OldGameBox contributed additional graphical enhancements; and _0mbra_ is acknowledged with special thanks.

Their collaborative efforts have culminated in a user-friendly patch that delivers an authentic and accessible experience to fans on modern hardware and emulators, including the Nintendo Switch via homebrew and other platforms. "For years, Western fans could only dream of playing the in-depth prologue to Mega Man Legends 2," the Hilltop Works group shared in a statement, mirrored in the project's launch trailer.

"Our team is thrilled to help preserve and share this once-region-locked experience with a wider audience." The fan translation patch was released on April 24, 2024, further broadening access to one of Capcom's hidden gems.

While Mega Man Legends 2 and related titles continue to enjoy enduring interest on modern digital storefronts like the Nintendo eShop, the availability of this prologue offers a window into previously unexplored narrative and gameplay territory.

For series fans and game preservation advocates, Hilltop Works’ translation is a milestone achievement and a testament to the enduring legacy of the Mega Man Legends series.
