Shigeru Miyamoto Clarifies: No Plans for a Connected Nintendo Cinematic Universe After Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Shigeru Miyamoto, the visionary behind many of Nintendo's most iconic franchises, has recently set the record straight regarding speculation about a potential "Nintendo Cinematic Universe." Speaking to Polygon after the high-profile reveal of Star Fox’s Fox McCloud in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Miyamoto emphasized that fans should not expect an interconnected movie universe in the vein of Super Smash Bros. or Marvel.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which debuted in theaters on April 1, marks another successful collaboration between Nintendo and animation powerhouse Illumination.

The film has already broken box office records for April, further cementing the appeal of Nintendo's beloved characters on the big screen.

The surprise appearance of Fox McCloud sparked conversations about deeper crossovers across Nintendo’s movie projects, leading to increased curiosity among longtime fans.

However, Miyamoto quickly dispelled the notion of a large-scale cinematic crossover.

"Unlike something like Super Smash Bros., you won’t see all Nintendo characters joining together in a single film," he told Polygon.

Miyamoto outlined that, while cameo appearances add excitement, there is a clear boundary between playful nods and a unified cinematic world.

He did acknowledge a personal exception for Pikmin, stating the plant-like creatures are uniquely suited for appearances across Nintendo’s movie endeavors.

Confirming previous reports, a Galaxy Movie promotional video has shown Pikmin making their film debut in a light-hearted cameo.

Miyamoto elaborated, noting, "There are plenty of characters to build a movie around, but we want to add just a little spice—small secret cameos here and there." He hinted that fans should watch closely for a secret character with a substantial role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

While denying plans for a Marvel-style reign of interconnected films, Miyamoto left the door open for more cameo appearances in future projects, such as further involvements for Fox McCloud and others.

His views were echoed by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, who clarified, "We don’t have a big ten-year plan for a Nintendo movie universe.

Our approach is about considering what’s fun within a particular scene, suggesting ideas like a surprise Pikmin appearance, and ultimately letting Miyamoto make the final call on what fits."

An additional interview detail revealed a personal touch behind Fox McCloud’s casting: Glen Powell, the actor behind Fox's voice, reportedly reached out directly to Nintendo to express his longstanding dream of participating in a Star Fox movie—just as internal discussions on McCloud’s movie role were underway.

Meledandri described this timing as "one of those gifts" in the development process.

With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie now showing in theaters and breaking box office records, Nintendo and Illumination have once again demonstrated the cross-generational appeal of Mario and friends.

Although there are no plans for a sweeping Nintendo Cinematic Universe, fans can look forward to surprising cameos and creative storytelling in whatever comes next for Nintendo movies and characters.
