Description

Kero Quest 64, an N64-inspired 3D platformer by independent developer Stratobox, has officially secured a Nintendo Switch port after a successful Kickstarter campaign.

The project, which channels the nostalgic spirit of classics like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, is now set to release both on Steam and the Nintendo Switch, much to the excitement of retro-platformer enthusiasts and Nintendo Switch owners alike. Stratobox, a team comprised of well-known modders and developers from the retro gaming community, has made waves with their foray into original game development.

The team features notable talents such as MelonSpeedruns, a recognized figure in Zelda modding, serving as lead programmer, and Mario 64 ROM hacker BroDute handling level design.

Rounding out the development crew are 3D modeller and animator TheRidiculousR and composer Jamphibious, further solidifying the group's deep roots in '90s platformer design and aesthetics. In a statement on their Kickstarter page, Stratobox wrote that their game was directly "inspired by other games in the genre, especially those from the late '90s." This sentiment is immediately visible in Kero Quest 64’s gameplay and visuals: Players control a polygonal blue frog with movesets reminiscent of those popularized by the Mushroom Kingdom, including long jumps, ground pounds, and side flips.

The commitment to delivering a true collectathon experience is evident, appealing to longtime fans of the platforming genre. Upon launch of the Kickstarter campaign, Kero Quest 64 quickly surpassed its initial funding goal, ensuring not just development but an official Steam release, to be published by GalaxyTrail.

The game currently targets an August 2026 launch on PC.

Notably, after breezing past the €25,000 stretch goal, Stratobox confirmed plans for a port to Nintendo Switch.

While it remains unconfirmed whether this will be for the current Switch hardware or a future iteration, the team emphasized their intent to bring the game to Nintendo's popular console. The Nintendo Switch has become a hotspot for N64-inspired titles, benefiting from both its nostalgic appeal and robust indie marketplace via the eShop.

With Kero Quest 64’s arrival, the platform continues to expand its library of retro-styled platformers, offering modern players a fresh yet familiar gameplay experience. For those interested in experiencing Kero Quest 64 ahead of its official release, a free demo is now available on Steam.

The Kickstarter campaign remains active until January 20, providing fans a chance to support the project and potentially unlock further stretch goals. With its blend of seasoned development talent and a clear homage to platforming classics, Kero Quest 64 stands out as an anticipated addition to both Steam and the Nintendo Switch.
