Description

With just under a year to go until the highly anticipated Lunar Remastered Collection launches, GungHo Online Entertainment America has provided a comprehensive look into the process and features behind these beloved classic game remasters.

The collection, featuring remastered versions of the renowned RPGs developed by Game Arts, is slated for global release on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and other platforms on April 18, 2025, with physical editions launching simultaneously. A critical decision faced by the development team was which version of the original games to use as the basis for the remasters, given the Lunar series’ storied history across multiple platforms, including SEGA-CD, PlayStation, PSP, and mobile.

Speaking to PlayStation.Blog, GungHo Producer Matthias Pergams explained that each edition of Lunar offered its own unique qualities, making the selection challenging.

Ultimately, the team chose the PlayStation version as the core for the remastered collection, believing it best encapsulated the essence of the series.

Pergams emphasized that the remasters remain true to the PS1 editions, with combat mechanics and narrative left unaltered to preserve the original vision from Game Arts. One of the most significant changes comes in the form of an all-new English voice cast.

While longtime fans may miss classic performances—such as John Truitt’s iconic portrayal of Ghaleon—Pergams noted that careful attention was paid to preserving the distinctive identities of each character through meticulous casting and direction.

The producer shared, "Our top priority was maintaining each character’s identity with their new voice actors.

We carefully selected individuals whose performances truly embodied the spirit of these beloved roles.

The final result is something the team is genuinely proud of." Music has received thoughtful updates as well.

All vocal tracks originally sung by Luna and Lucia have been re-recorded with the new voices, styled closely after the original Japanese versions.

Returning series composer Noriyuki Iwadare contributed fresh content as well, penning a brand new song, 'Looking up at TERRA,' which will play during the game selection screen. The Lunar Remastered Collection features multiple quality of life improvements, including the ability to speed up battles and implement customizable AI options.

Additionally, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete introduces a new inventory toggle, allowing players to choose between a unified inventory system or retain the classic individual character inventories. Graphically, players can switch between upgraded remastered visuals—featuring improved effects, updated UI, and animated cutscene touch-ups—and the original PS1 graphics, complete with an optional CRT filter for a retro feel.

Remastered mode upgrades include an optimized aspect ratio for modern displays, while classic mode maintains the authentic 4:3 presentation.

Pergams assured fans, "We took great care to ensure visual enhancements remained faithful to the originals, respecting the art direction and atmosphere that made the series iconic." Importantly, GungHo has collaborated directly with the original Lunar series creative staff, including the scenario writer and character designer, the latter of whom returned to craft new artwork for this collection.

Every enhancement and update was developed with the blessing of Game Arts, reinforcing the collection's authenticity. The Lunar Remastered Collection represents a passion project for its creators and a major event for classic RPG aficionados.

With its mix of faithful remastering, modern features, and new creative touches, the collection is shaping up to be a must-have title when it arrives on April 18, 2025.
