Lunar Remastered Collection Launches April 2025 on Nintendo Switch: Celebrating an RPG Legacy
Long regarded as cornerstones of the golden era of Japanese role-playing games, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete are returning to modern platforms in the Lunar Remastered Collection, set to launch on Nintendo Switch on April 18, 2025.
Developed in collaboration by Ashibi and the legendary Game Arts, and published by GungHo, this new release revitalizes two of the genre's most beloved adventures, ensuring a new generation of players can experience their heartfelt tales and innovative mechanics.
The Lunar series began in 1992 with the original Lunar: The Silver Star, co-developed by Game Arts and Studio Alex for the SEGA CD.
It made waves in the RPG world for its pioneering use of CD-ROM technology, impressive animated cutscenes, full voice acting, and a memorable orchestral score—features that defined a new standard for storytelling in games.
Its sequel, Lunar: Eternal Blue, followed in 1994, expanding the universe with a deeper narrative and enhanced audiovisual presentation.
These titles captivated a devoted audience and have since been celebrated as classics of the RPG genre.
Throughout the late 1990s, both games received PlayStation remakes—Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete—courtesy of Game Arts and North American publisher Working Designs.
These remakes saw upgrades in graphics, voice acting, gameplay mechanics, and bonus story content, winning over a new wave of fans in the process.
Today, the Lunar Remastered Collection not only includes both of these definitive versions but offers them in two forms: preserved in their original PlayStation look and feel as well as in a newly enhanced HD remaster.
Switch players will benefit from updates like a streamlined battle tactics menu, improved AI for skills and magic, and a dedicated battle speed-up feature that accelerates combat without affecting exploration or cutscenes.
Save data is freely interchangeable between versions, letting enthusiasts compare differences in cutscene presentation and narrative details.
"Bringing these formative RPG adventures to Nintendo Switch honors the games’ legacy and welcomes new players to experience their magic," the developers stated, highlighting that both newcomers and series veterans can select the version that best suits their nostalgic or modern tastes.
The narrative heart of Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete follows Alex, a young dreamer inspired by legends, embarking on an earnest adventure full of hope, friendship, and classic coming-of-age themes.
In contrast, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete delves into deeper, more mature storytelling, as protagonists Hiro and Lucia grapple with destiny, sacrifice, and the burdens of a world in turmoil.
Despite evolving emotional depth, both games retain the whimsy, humor, and sincerity that distinguished them in the 90s.
From its iconic pixel art and sweeping musical numbers to its well-crafted turn-based RPG mechanics, the Lunar series is a testament to timeless game design.
Players command a party, strategize with unique skills and magic, and explore vibrant worlds brimming with charming NPCs, hidden treasures, and clever dungeon puzzles.
Veteran RPG fans will find Lunar Remastered Collection both comfortably familiar and thoughtfully refreshed, while new entrants get a window into the rich legacy of 16-bit adventures.
Lunar Remastered Collection will be available through the Nintendo eShop starting April 18, 2025.
By blending modern enhancements with respect for the original experience, Ashibi, Game Arts, and GungHo deliver not just a nostalgic repackage, but a true celebration for RPG enthusiasts—inviting both longtime fans and new adventurers to dream of the stars once again on Nintendo Switch.
