EDGE Magazine July 2024 Review Roundup: Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, Reanimal, MIO: Memories In Orbit, and More

EDGE Magazine, the long-running and respected UK gaming publication, has released its July 2024 issue, now available both in stores and online.

Catering to a discerning audience of industry insiders and passionate gamers, EDGE is renowned for its comprehensive reviews and in-depth analysis of notable new games.

The current edition features a diverse lineup, including Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, Reanimal, Cairn, MIO: Memories In Orbit, and more.

This month’s scores have been shared by prominent ResetEra user WadiumArcadium, igniting discussion among fans and industry observers alike about the magazine’s verdicts on this season's most anticipated releases. One of the main highlights, Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, released for PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series platforms, received a 6 out of 10 from EDGE.

According to the magazine’s review, “the repetitive, segmented storyline and uninspiring main cast mean Reimagined is best enjoyed as a sequence of short fairytale vignettes.

While these segments offer moments of charm and enjoyment, the overarching adventure fails to fully ignite a sense of exploration.” Reanimal, developed by Tarsier Studios and available on PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series, scored an impressive 8.

The review commented on Tarsier’s advancement of the choreographed horror genre, stating that only the ingenuity of ‘Inside’ surpasses its achievement.

While some minor flaws persist, the article notes, Reanimal “transcends its ‘Little Nightmares’ origins and brings a distinctive and haunting experience to players.” MIO: Memories In Orbit, launched on PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series, also garnered a strong 8.

Despite some criticism of its equipment management system, EDGE praised the game’s ability to use familiar gameplay mechanics in surprisingly profound ways.

“As familiar as MIO: Memories In Orbit may be, it occasionally delivers moments of genuine depth,” the review summarized. Other notable titles include Nioh 3 (PC, PS5) earning an 8 for Team Ninja’s refined production values, and Cairn (PC, PS5) with a 7, lauded for its ambitious, if sometimes unwieldy, approach to climbing and immersive character study.

Romeo Is A Dead Man (PC, PS5, Xbox Series) received a 7, recognized for imaginative moments despite repetitive late-game combat—a signature quirk for developer Grasshopper Manufacture. EDGE’s scoring continues with 2XKO by Riot Games scoring 7, commended for user-friendly onboarding but facing challenges in converting skeptics of the fighting game genre.

Highguard (PC, PS5, Xbox Series) received a more reserved 5, with acknowledgment of developer Wildlight’s ambitious roadmap and suggestions for future improvement.

Meanwhile, Mewgenics (PC) secured an 8 for its creative aesthetics and unpredictable gameplay loop, and Pathologic 3 (PC, PS5, Xbox Series) also earned an 8 for its multifaceted systems supporting a deep narrative. The Nintendo Switch platform remains well represented, featuring Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, Reanimal, MIO: Memories In Orbit, I Hate This Place (4/10), and Ratcheteer DX (7/10), exemplifying the system’s continued support for both major and indie releases. With each new issue, EDGE Magazine reaffirms its commitment to critical, thorough coverage of the gaming landscape, offering detailed perspectives that fuel discourse throughout the industry.
