King of Tokyo Video Game Announced for Nintendo Switch by Microids: Release Set for Spring 2026

Microids officially announced the development of King of Tokyo, a brand-new video game adaptation of the acclaimed monster-themed tabletop classic.

The title is set to launch on Nintendo Switch in Spring 2026 and aims to capture the spirit of the original board game, bringing its competitive, dice-rolling action to a global digital audience.

Originally created by celebrated designer Richard Garfield, the King of Tokyo board game has gained worldwide recognition for its fast-paced gameplay and engaging strategy.

In this video game version, Microids continues the franchise’s legacy, offering players the chance to control destructive kaiju as they compete for dominance in a chaotic digital Tokyo.

King of Tokyo on Nintendo Switch features both solo play against AI and local multiplayer matches with up to five participants, maintaining the game’s accessible, party-style roots.

Players take turns as massive monsters – including fan favorites like Gigazaur, Cyber Kitty, Alienoid, King, Mecha Dragon, and Space Penguin.

The objective remains faithful to the tabletop original: earn Victory Points or become the last monster standing.

Players roll dice to attack, heal, buy cards, and manipulate strategies, with each round offering a new opportunity to seize the crown of King of Tokyo. A spokesperson for Microids emphasized the team’s commitment to authenticity: "Our digital adaptation ensures that every fan of strategic board gaming will experience the thrill of competition, evolving tactics, and monster mayhem that defines King of Tokyo." The development team has worked meticulously to integrate the iconic power card system, ensuring each session delivers a dynamic experience with unique scenarios and outcomes. In addition to its gameplay fidelity, the digital King of Tokyo incorporates fully animated monsters and atmospheric sound design, delivering a vibrant, immersive environment.

Whether playing solo or with friends, players can expect customizable AI and difficulty settings, ensuring both newcomers and veteran fans are challenged at every turn. King of Tokyo will be available for purchase both in physical retail stores and digitally on the Nintendo eShop, continuing Microids’ tradition of accessible, player-focused launches.

The Spring 2026 release is poised to expand the reach of the King of Tokyo franchise while highlighting Nintendo Switch’s ongoing appeal as a platform for family-friendly, multiplayer titles. With King of Tokyo joining the growing list of board game adaptations for Nintendo Switch, Microids reinforces its reputation as a leader in translating tabletop experiences for a new era.
