ININ Games has announced an exciting revival of Apidya, the cult-classic Commodore Amiga shoot 'em up, with a 24-bit pixel remake set to launch across Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2025.
This reveal brings a beloved staple of 1990s gaming to modern platforms, promising a meticulous and authentic upgrade for both longtime fans and a new generation of players.
First released in 1992 by German developer Kaiko, Apidya distinguished itself in a crowded field of side-scrolling shooters.
Unlike its contemporaries, which mostly adopted outer-space motifs, Apidya placed players in the unique role of a man transformed into a wasp, navigating a host of naturalistic environments.
This distinctive premise was well received by critics of the era, with positive coverage in iconic publications such as Amiga Power and Amiga Format.
Over the years, Apidya has seen releases from a variety of publishers, including Play Byte, Blue Byte Software’s publishing arm, as well as a budget run by Team17 in 1994.
Now, over three decades later, ININ Games is leading the charge on Apidya’s rebirth as "Apidya' Special".
The remake benefits from the insight of the original development team at Kaiko and the passionate involvement of a developer who began as a dedicated Apidya fan.
According to the official announcement, the project draws inspiration from a previously shelved console port planned in the 1990s, ensuring a blend of authenticity and fresh creative direction for the title.
In a statement released by ININ Games, Peter Thierolf, the original creator, expressed his enthusiasm: "Returning to Apidya after so many years seemed unlikely, but thanks to advances in technology, a dedicated team, and the support of our community, we’re finally able to realize the version we always envisioned." The remake is being built entirely from scratch, eschewing both emulation and AI upscaling.
Instead, it features newly handcrafted pixel art combined with original assets, staying true to the spirit of the Amiga classic.
ININ Games has been explicit in their promise: “no 3D models” and “no AI upscaling — just handcrafted pixels and passion.”
Key features of Apidya' Special set it apart as a definitive edition for retro and modern gamers alike:
- **Authentic Remake**: Built from the ground up to capture the original gameplay, with no emulation involved.
- **Two Visual Modes**: Seamlessly switch between a modern HD widescreen presentation or the original Amiga’s 4:3 aspect ratio.

With its release on Nintendo Switch and other major platforms, Apidya' Special aims to preserve the legacy of a pioneering Amiga title while introducing new gameplay refinements and accessibility.
