ININ Games has set a firm release date for Apidya Special, the 24-bit pixel remake of the 1992 Amiga shooter Apidya.
The remake, developed with involvement from the original Apidya team and collaborators under the Team Apidya banner, will arrive on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch on August 25, 2026.
Physical editions for Nintendo Switch and PS5 are available to pre-order now via ININ Games' official store, with a Limited Edition priced at $29.99 and a Special Edition at $49.99.
Background and legacy
Apidya was originally created by German studio Kaiko and first released on the Commodore Amiga in 1992.
Noted at the time for putting players in the role of a man transformed into a wasp and for its naturalistic level themes, the title earned positive coverage from Amiga-era publications and went on to be distributed by publishers including Play Byte and, later, Team17.
What Apidya Special includes
According to the official announcement and developer materials, Apidya Special is a rebuild rather than an emulation: the project combines original assets with newly handcrafted pixel art and explicitly avoids 3D models or AI upscaling.
The remake offers two visual modes — an HD widescreen presentation and an option to play in the original Amiga 4:3 aspect ratio — plus retro visual effects such as optional CRT shaders, bloom and scanline simulation.
The package will include an exclusive Official Soundtrack Collection by composer Chris Hülsbeck, featuring newly arranged material alongside classic tracks.
The Special Edition physical release is described as including a History Artbook that documents Apidya's legacy and development.
Features listed by the publisher include expanded worlds (five themed areas with up to five levels each), 20 unique bosses, hidden special stages, randomized in-game events, local co-op where a second player controls a helper drone, and modern accessibility and difficulty options.
Developer context and community response
Peter Thierolf, the original creator, said the team did not expect to return to Apidya after decades but credited modern tools, the assembled team and community passion for enabling a faithful remake.
Some members of the community have compared expectations for this release to ININ Games' recent work on other remakes, citing prior accuracy concerns on separate projects.
ININ Games' announcement follows an earlier reveal in August 2025 and a new pre-order trailer is available from the publisher for those wanting an early look.
Further updates will likely appear on ININ Games' site and storefronts such as the Nintendo eShop as launch approaches.
