The updated edition of Looking Glass Studios’ seminal 1998 stealth classic will arrive on PC and console platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation (PS5) and Xbox Series (X|S).
Background and context
Thief: The Dark Project originally launched in 1998 and helped define modern stealth gameplay by shifting focus away from the mid-’90s FPS emphasis on gunplay toward quiet, deliberate infiltration.
Players assume the role of Garrett, a master thief trained from childhood, and navigate a Victorian-inspired cityscape while uncovering a conspiracy that drives the narrative.
The series’ influence can be seen across stealth franchises that followed.
What the remaster includes
Nightdive Studios’ remaster aims to preserve the original’s stealth and level design while modernizing presentation and accessibility.
The developer says the project focuses on retaining the precision of Garrett’s stealth mechanics while upgrading visual fidelity and interface systems.
The remaster will support up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second on capable hardware, and includes an overhauled control scheme alongside updated UI elements.
Key features listed by the publisher and developer include:
- 4K, 60 FPS visual upgrade on compatible platforms
- Reworked controls and modernized user interface
- New weapon wheel and level selector for easier navigation
- A behind-the-scenes vault and a custom campaign designer for player-made content
