Mario Kart World Maintains Unchallenged Lead on Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan: June Sales Analysis Nintendo's reign over the Japanese gaming market shows no signs of slowing, as the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to reach new milestones with robust hardware and software sales.

According to the latest data from Famitsu, the week spanning June 9th to 16th, 2024, witnessed Mario Kart World secure its position as the top-selling game for the second straight week on the Nintendo Switch 2 platform.

This achievement underscores both the enduring popularity of Nintendo’s flagship franchises and the continued consumer excitement surrounding new hardware. Mario Kart World, released for the Nintendo Switch 2, remained the week's frontrunner by selling an impressive 134,900 physical copies, pushing its cumulative Japanese sales to 917,466 units.

As noted by Famitsu’s weekly sales report, this figure far surpasses that of the next-highest entry—Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time for Nintendo Switch— which logged 11,217 units for a total of 123,121 copies since release.

Rounding out the upper echelon, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma sold 9,724 copies this week, with cumulative sales reaching 55,427 on the Switch. Classic titles continue to demonstrate their long-term appeal.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the original Switch sold 6,460 units, adding to its already astonishing 6.3 million lifetime domestic sales.

Minecraft also achieved another strong week, pushing 5,916 copies for a Japanese total of nearly 3.9 million on Switch.

Notably, both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom—each released in dedicated Switch 2 Editions—retained their top-ten standings.

This week, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild outpaced its sequel by a single unit, with 4,409 versus 4,408 units sold, respectively. Aside from Elden Ring Nightreign, which stood out as the only non-Nintendo release in the top ten, Nintendo first-party titles filled the chart.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and other mainstays continue their steady performance, each contributing to the Switch’s rich portfolio. From a hardware standpoint, the Nintendo Switch 2 has swiftly surpassed the one million units sold marker in Japan—an achievement highlighted by its 153,205 units moved during the examined week.

This brings the total sales figure for Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan to an outstanding 1,101,136 units.

The original Switch lineup also showed resilience, with the Switch Lite and Switch OLED versions selling 5,485 and 5,447 units, respectively.

The original Switch sold 2,387 units, bringing its cumulative figure to over 20.1 million domestic sales. Sony’s PlayStation 5 platform, encompassing the standard, Pro, and Digital Edition SKUs, collectively registered over 15,000 units sold during the same week, with the regular PS5 responsible for 9,612 of those sales. Famitsu’s detailed breakdown reaffirms Nintendo’s dominance in its home region, driven by both new flagship titles like Mario Kart World and the persistent appeal of established franchises.

As Nintendo Switch 2 continues its upward momentum, competitors and industry observers alike will watch closely to see if this pace continues throughout 2024. For complete charts and further insights, refer to the official Famitsu report.
