Switch 2 Breaks 5 Million Sales in Japan as Pokémon Pokopia Dominates Weekly Charts

Nintendo's dominance in the Japanese gaming market remains unchallenged this week, as the Nintendo Switch 2 has officially surpassed 5 million units sold in Japan, according to the latest Famitsu physical sales charts.

This milestone, achieved less than a year after its launch on June 5, 2025, cements the Switch 2 as the leading console in the region, outpacing competitors in both hardware and software sales.

Pokémon Pokopia, the latest collaboration between Game Freak and Omega Force, continues its reign atop the physical software charts.

For the week of March 30 to April 5, 2026, the title sold an impressive 45,484 copies, bringing its total physical sales to 867,171 units.

The game's momentum shows no signs of letting up, as it rapidly approaches the coveted 1 million physical copies mark.

In a statement reflective of the broader trend, industry analysts note that the Switch platform—including both Switch and Switch 2—consistently accounts for a significant portion of Japan's top ten physical game sales.

This week, aside from the PlayStation 5's Crimson Desert at ninth place, all titles in the top ten are for Nintendo systems.

Mario Kart World returned to second place with 8,131 copies sold, adding to its lifetime tally of nearly 2.9 million.

Minecraft's enduring popularity ensured its Switch version claimed third place, shifting another 5,186 copies for a staggering lifetime total of over 4.1 million.

Other notable performers include Mega Man Star Force: Legacy Collection with 4,956 units sold, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which remains a mainstay at fifth place, contributing to its lifetime sales of over 8.4 million in Japan.

The latest Monster Hunter Stories installment and a special Super Mario Bros.

Wonder edition also charted, underscoring the strength of Nintendo’s evergreen franchises.

On the hardware front, the Switch 2 led the charts by a wide margin, moving 59,543 units during the week.

This brings its cumulative sales to 5,011,059—an achievement that reflects both robust demand and strong first-party software support.

The original Nintendo Switch family remains resilient as well; the OLED, Lite, and standard models sold a combined 16,342 units, further extending their lead in the Japanese market.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 consoles, including the Digital and Pro editions, moved a combined total of 13,539 units.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's Xbox Series X and S lines showed modest performance, with the Series X nearly matching the base PS5's weekly numbers.

With Nintendo Switch 2 now crossing the 5 million mark in Japan, the platform’s momentum appears unstoppable.

The combination of exclusive hits like Pokémon Pokopia, enduring franchises, and strong hardware appeal continues to set Nintendo apart in one of the world’s most competitive gaming markets.
