Mario Kart World Tops Japanese Charts as Nintendo Switch 2 Dominates Hardware Sales

The latest Famitsu Japanese sales data reveals that Nintendo’s dominance continues, as Mario Kart World retains its lead at the top of the weekly charts.

Released for the Nintendo Switch 2, Mario Kart World pushed an impressive 103,861 physical units between December 8th and 14th, elevating its total sales to 2,458,007 units.

This milestone further cements Mario Kart World’s status as a heavyweight in the Nintendo Switch 2 lineup. Pokémon Legends: Z-A remains a formidable contender, with its combined sales on both Switch (50,292 units for the week, 1,397,534 total) and Switch 2 (40,813 units, 903,190 total) drawing close to Mario Kart World’s cumulative numbers.

The continued momentum of Pokémon Legends: Z-A highlights the enduring appeal of the franchise and the strong support it receives across generations of Nintendo systems. Kirby Air Riders secures the fourth position with 39,206 copies sold on the standard Nintendo Switch, bringing its lifetime sales to 327,824 units.

Also making a mark is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, which rounds out the top ten with 8,001 physical copies sold this week and an all-time total of 126,461. Other notable appearances in the top ten include Momotaro Dentetsu 2: Anata no Machi mo Kitto Aru – Higashi Nihon Hen + Nishi Nihon Hen, which ranks fifth and sixth between its Switch 2 (18,964 units, 132,058 total) and Switch (18,015 units, 177,007 total) versions.

Donkey Kong Bananza for Switch 2 remains a consistent presence, with 12,519 units added to its 403,783 lifetime sales. Minecraft and Animal Crossing: New Horizons continue their extraordinary performance, with total sales surpassing four million and eight million units respectively on Nintendo platforms. From a hardware perspective, the Nintendo Switch 2 remains the leading console in Japan, achieving weekly sales of 190,944 units, bringing its lifetime figure to 3,362,777 units.

The Switch Lite follows with 14,885 units sold (life-to-date: 6,780,048), while the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition posted 12,671 units—boosted by recent price reductions.

The PlayStation 5 itself sold 3,270 units, overshadowed by the enduring popularity of Nintendo’s hardware portfolio, which continues to capture the majority market share. Comparatively, Xbox consoles reported modest figures, with the Xbox Series X Digital Edition only managing 131 units, reinforcing Nintendo’s commanding position in Japan’s console market. In summary, Nintendo’s consistent performance is reflected both in software and hardware sales.

Mario Kart World continues to attract new players, while Pokémon Legends: Z-A closes the sales gap.

The Switch 2’s robust numbers underscore Nintendo’s strong position leading into the new year, further reaffirmed by the diverse, high-performing software library available on the Nintendo eShop and at retail.
