Monster Hunter Wilds Retains Top Spot in Japan as Nintendo Switch Classics Continue to Shine
The Japanese gaming landscape remains as competitive as ever, with Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds maintaining its position atop the country’s sales charts.
Fresh off its hugely successful launch, Monster Hunter Wilds added another 101,058 copies sold on PlayStation 5 during its second week, according to the most recent figures released by Famitsu.
While sales have cooled from its opening week, the title's continued momentum underscores its strong fan base and critical acclaim in Japan.
Meanwhile, Konami's much-anticipated Suikoden I & II HD Remaster made a notable debut, shifting 38,884 units on Nintendo Switch and an additional 10,482 on PlayStation 5.
Though these numbers represent a strong start for the remastered RPG collection, they were not enough to dethrone Monster Hunter Wilds from its leading position.
In a quieter release week, Suikoden might well have topped the charts, but Capcom’s action RPG juggernaut proved too formidable.
The rest of the software top ten is populated by established Nintendo Switch favorites.
Super Mario Party Jamboree took fourth place, adding 9,969 units to its lifetime total, which now surpasses 1.21 million copies.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD followed in fifth with 8,531 sales, while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to demonstrate incredible longevity, selling another 8,249 copies and pushing its cumulative sales over 6.27 million in Japan.
Minecraft (Switch Edition) added 6,347 units to its already impressive 3.82 million sold locally.
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Animal Crossing: New Horizons remain ever-present in the rankings, with sales of 4,266 and 4,256 units, respectively.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection, which held second place the previous week, rounded out the top ten with 3,648 copies sold.
On the hardware front, Monster Hunter Wilds' runaway success has buoyed the PlayStation 5 platform, which once again led weekly hardware sales.
Sony’s flagship console sold 37,373 units, while the Switch OLED Model followed closely with 24,944 units.
Total PlayStation 5 sales across all SKUs reached 52,520 units for the week, outpacing the Nintendo Switch family’s 37,841.
Notably, Switch Lite, the lower-priced handheld-only variant, continued to show steady demand, selling 8,716 units.
The enduring popularity of Nintendo Switch software highlights the platform’s strong position in Japan’s console market, even as new challengers like Monster Hunter Wilds make headlines.
As the industry looks forward to upcoming releases—including potential shakeups from anticipated titles like Xenoblade—both Capcom and Nintendo appear well poised for continued success.
