This week’s Japanese boxed game charts reveal that 'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles 2' has debuted at number one on Nintendo Switch, securing its place as the best-selling title in Japan for the week of July 28th to August 3rd.
According to the latest data published by Famitsu, the Switch version of the action-packed anime adaptation commanded 54,491 unit sales in its launch week, outperforming the newly released 'Mario Kart World' for Switch 2, which moved 51,544 copies and landed in the second spot.
Notably, when the PlayStation 5 version’s 12,351 sales are considered, 'Demon Slayer' takes an even more comfortable lead among new releases.
The top ten list features several new entries and familiar favorites.
'Castlevania Advance Collection' made its boxed debut on Nintendo Switch, ranking seventh with 9,101 units sold.
Fan-favorite 'Mario Kart 8 Deluxe' also continues to perform impressively, further demonstrating the franchise’s sustaining popularity.
With 'Mario Kart World' and 'Mario Kart 8 Deluxe' both securing top ten positions, Nintendo's racing legacy remains at the forefront of the market.
Other notable inclusions this week are 'Donkey Kong Bananza' for Switch 2 at number three with 25,199 copies sold, and 'hololive Holo's Hanafuda' debuting in the fourth position with 16,200 units on Nintendo Switch.
Long-running global sensation 'Minecraft' retains a strong presence at eighth, adding 7,932 more units to its staggering 3.95 million lifetime sales on Switch.
On the hardware side, the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to dominate, selling 62,733 units this week, further extending its lifetime sales to over 1.67 million units.
The Switch OLED and Switch Lite held their own, with sales of 10,506 and 5,505 units respectively, while PlayStation 5 models collectively reached 7,141 units across standard, Pro, and Digital Editions.
The original Nintendo Switch, now into its seventh year, still managed to more than double PlayStation 5’s weekly figures despite the presence of its next-generation successor.
Famitsu’s data confirms Nintendo’s strong grip on the Japanese market, with five Switch models occupying top slots in hardware sales.
Commenting on the chart-toppers, market analysts point out that franchise strength and consistent first-party support continue to fuel software and hardware performance alike.
This week’s results underline the enduring appeal of both new and classic titles on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 hardware, as well as the healthy appetite of consumers for boxed video game releases in Japan.
With no significant shifts in hardware sales rankings, Nintendo’s momentum remains unchallenged in its home market.
