1 in Japan’s Physical Game Sales Charts, Outpacing Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Mario Kart World Square Enix's highly anticipated Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake made a thunderous debut in the Japanese physical game sales charts last week, according to newly published data from Famitsu.

The remake launched simultaneously across Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Nintendo Switch 2, instantly securing the top three spots in terms of weekly unit sales. The return of these iconic RPG classics, reimagined with Square Enix’s distinct HD-2D visual style, captured the attention of Japanese gamers.

In its opening week (27 October to 2 November), Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake sold a combined total of 413,518 physical copies, split between the Nintendo Switch (232,250 units), PS5 (96,812 units), and Switch 2 (84,456 units).

This strong launch puts the remake at the forefront of Square Enix’s successful franchise revivals on modern platforms such as the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. The momentum of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake pushed two other perennial favorites, Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Mario Kart World, out of the top three.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 took fourth and sixth spots, with unit sales of 82,812 and 35,926 respectively, while Mario Kart World on Switch 2 came in fifth with 50,845 copies sold.

Despite being edged out from the podium, both titles maintain impressive lifetime numbers, with Mario Kart World surpassing 2 million units on Switch 2 and Pokémon Legends: Z-A exceeding 1.15 million on Switch since release. Other notable new entries in the physical charts include Tales of Xillia Remastered, available on Nintendo Switch (10,370 units) and PS5 (7,290 units), as well as Earthion for Switch, which debuted with 5,689 units sold.

Donkey Kong Bananza for Switch 2 also secured a place in the top 10, continuing steady sales with 8,227 units for the week. Turning to hardware, the Nintendo Switch 2 cemented its status as Japan’s top-selling console.

With an additional 83,825 units sold, the platform surpassed 2.55 million lifetime sales.

The original Nintendo Switch platform family—including OLED Model, Lite, and standard SKUs—combined for more than 26,700 units and continues to demonstrate Nintendo’s strong presence in the Japanese market.

In contrast, PlayStation 5 models managed 7,537 sales, while Xbox Series consoles trailed with comparatively low numbers. These figures underline the enduring influence of legacy franchises and remasters on current-generation hardware, highlighting Square Enix’s ability to reengage a new wave of players while leveraging the widespread popularity of the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.

As new titles like Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake take the spotlight, they set the tone for a dynamic holiday season in Japan's competitive games market. For a full breakdown of physical game and hardware sales in Japan, readers can refer to Famitsu’s official weekly charts.
