In the latest weekly video game sales report from Famitsu, covering the period March 3rd to 9th, 2025, the Nintendo Switch platform has once again demonstrated its enduring popularity in the Japanese gaming market.

Famitsu’s boxed video game and hardware charts provide a reliable pulse on consumer trends in Japan, underscoring the Switch’s dominant role in software sales even more than seven years after its initial release. This week’s charts show an impressive performance for Nintendo.

Out of the top ten best-selling physical software titles, eight were for the Nintendo Switch.

This further cements the Switch’s robust software ecosystem and its widespread appeal to Japanese gamers.

The newly-released Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars by Konami made a strong debut, landing at number two on the charts in its Switch version.

Its PlayStation 5 counterpart closely followed, securing the third spot, demonstrating a healthy interest in classic RPG remasters on both leading platforms. Leading the sales this week was Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds for PlayStation 5, which moved an impressive 101,058 units, reaching a lifetime total of over 700,000 copies sold.

The Suikoden I & II HD Remaster on Switch sold 38,884 units in its debut week, while the PlayStation 5 version recorded 10,482 units.

Fan-favorite Nintendo exclusives like Super Mario Party Jamboree, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continued to chart with thousands of additional sales, underscoring the persistent demand for Nintendo’s first-party software.

Lifetime sales for perennial hits remain remarkable: Animal Crossing: New Horizons surpassed 8 million copies, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe reached over 6.2 million units sold in Japan alone. On the hardware side, the PlayStation 5 led the week with 37,373 units sold, bringing its lifetime Japanese sales to 5,587,488.

The Nintendo Switch OLED Model ranked second with 24,944 units, contributing to the Switch family’s cumulative sales milestone of over 35 million consoles in Japan, factoring in all revisions including the original model and Switch Lite.

While PlayStation 5 continues to perform strongly, the sustained momentum of the Switch platform highlights Nintendo’s exceptional ability to drive hardware and software engagement in the Japanese market. Industry analysts often point out that the Switch’s versatility, broad library, and appeal across all ages help maintain its strong presence in retail charts.

Famitsu’s detailed reporting serves as a testament to the platform’s ongoing relevance, years after its launch.

As new titles release and legacy franchises see modern remasters, the Japanese physical games market remains vibrant and highly competitive, with Nintendo leading the way for yet another week.
