Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that Red Dead Redemption and its acclaimed expansion, Undead Nightmare, will be launching on the Nintendo Switch 2 on December 2, 2025.
This long-anticipated release marks a major milestone for both Rockstar and Nintendo fans, offering players the chance to experience the critically celebrated Western adventure on next-generation Switch hardware with a suite of technical upgrades.
Red Dead Redemption, originally developed by Rockstar Games, first captivated audiences when it debuted on PlayStation and Xbox consoles in 2010.
More recently, the title made its way to the Nintendo Switch in 2023, drawing praise for bringing the expansive Wild West epic to a portable format.
In their review of the Switch release, leading gaming outlets awarded the port high marks, praising its faithfulness to the original gameplay and narrative, despite some limitations in multiplayer and visual fidelity.
Now, Rockstar is set to deliver a definitive version of Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare for Nintendo Switch 2.
In a statement from the developer, Rockstar Games emphasized that existing owners of the game on Switch will be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 version at no additional cost.
Additionally, save data from the original Switch release can be transferred seamlessly to the new platform, ensuring that players can pick up where they left off without missing a beat.
The upcoming Switch 2 port comes equipped with an array of enhanced features, including support for DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), HDR (High Dynamic Range), mouse controls, and a targeted 60 frames per second—significant improvements that align the game with the technical capabilities of the next-generation hardware.
These upgrades promise not only a visual boost but also a smoother, more immersive gameplay experience, whether playing docked or in handheld mode.
This announcement closely follows a recent update on the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) website, which listed Red Dead Redemption with a new rating for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The ESRB notes maintain the game's mature rating for content such as blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, strong language, sexual content, and drug use.
The Red Dead Redemption franchise has been a significant success for Rockstar Games, previously breaking sales milestones and earning widespread critical acclaim.
After the original's re-release on Switch, speculation mounted around additional ports, including rumors of Red Dead Redemption 2 heading to Switch 2; however, no official announcements have been made regarding a sequel release for Nintendo hardware.
Meanwhile, Rockstar's other flagship title, Grand Theft Auto VI, has seen its release postponed, with a new launch date set for November 19, 2026.
With Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare set to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2, longtime fans and newcomers alike will soon have the opportunity to experience one of gaming’s most beloved sagas with modern enhancements, free upgrades for existing owners, and full save data continuity.
