Hulu App Discontinued on Nintendo Switch as Disney+ Integration Advances

Nintendo Switch Users Lose Hulu App as Streaming Service Ends Support Nintendo has officially announced that support for the Hulu app on the original Nintendo Switch console will be discontinued.

According to a statement from Nintendo, the Hulu streaming service on the handheld hybrid platform will no longer be supported starting Thursday, February 5th.

This marks a significant shift in the landscape of streaming options available to Nintendo Switch users as Hulu transitions further into the Disney+ ecosystem. Originally launching on Nintendo Switch in late 2017, Hulu was the first major streaming app to arrive on the console.

Its presence gave Switch owners access to thousands of TV shows and movies, complementing the gaming experience with versatile entertainment options.

Over the years, the app remained a staple for users in the United States looking to stream their favorite content directly from their gaming device. In a statement released by Nintendo, the company confirmed, "Hulu for Nintendo Switch will no longer be supported after February 5th.

We appreciate our users for enjoying the Hulu service on Nintendo Switch throughout the years." This move follows Hulu’s broader integration into Disney+, a transition that has been underway since Disney acquired full operational control of Hulu in 2019.

Notably, Disney+ currently does not have a dedicated app available on the Nintendo Switch platform. For users who regularly stream content via their Switch consoles, the discontinuation of Hulu represents a narrowing of media options, as popular streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ are also not natively supported on the system.

The removal of Hulu underscores the slowly evolving relationship between streaming platforms and the Nintendo ecosystem, which continues to give priority to its core gaming content and Nintendo eShop titles. Despite this change, the Nintendo Switch remains one of the best-selling consoles worldwide, with over 125 million units sold as of early 2024.

The company maintains a strong focus on gaming-first experiences and regularly updates users through Nintendo Direct presentations and the Nintendo eShop.

As the streaming media environment continues to evolve, many fans are hopeful that future integrations or software updates could eventually bring more video-on-demand services to the console. For now, Switch gamers who previously depended on Hulu for entertainment will need to explore other devices to access Hulu and Disney+ content.

Nintendo has encouraged users to check the Nintendo eShop and its official channels for any future announcements regarding streaming apps and entertainment services on the Switch platform.
