Hideki Kamiya, the renowned creator behind iconic titles such as Devil May Cry, Okami, and Viewtiful Joe, continues to shape conversations within the gaming community.
Now leading the newly established Clovers Studio after his departure from PlatinumGames in 2023, Kamiya remains an influential voice in game development.
His leadership at PlatinumGames brought highly praised titles to platforms like the Nintendo Switch, including Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101.
Kamiya is widely recognized for his candidness, regularly engaging with fans via his official YouTube channel where he answers questions and offers insight into the game industry.
In a recent Q&A session—highlighted by VGC—a fan inquired about Kamiya’s interest in revisiting and potentially remaking the original Devil May Cry, which first launched in 2001 on PlayStation 2 and has since seen wide acclaim and multiple sequels.
Reflecting on the title’s age and legacy, Kamiya shared, “Of course I’d love to do that.” While he confessed that he typically avoids replaying his own creations after release, including Devil May Cry, he does occasionally come across gameplay footage that reminds him just how much the design shows its age.
"Sometimes I see clips and realize it really does feel like a game from 24 years ago," Kamiya observed.
Kamiya elaborated on the possibility of a modern remake, stating that, with current technology and refined game development methodologies, he would be eager to completely reimagine Devil May Cry from the ground up.
He admitted he doesn’t develop specific plans unless a project is officially in motion, but assured fans: “If the time comes, I'll come up with something.
That's what I do!"
In a light-hearted moment, Kamiya turned to Capcom, stating, “Capcom—please entrust it to me,” before also jokingly asking to helm a new iteration of Viewtiful Joe, another cult classic from his Capcom tenure with Clover Studio.
Following his direction of the original Devil May Cry, Kamiya transitioned to other notable projects, including Resident Evil 0, the creation of Okami, and ultimately founding PlatinumGames, where he expanded his portfolio with Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101, and Astral Chain.
Now at the helm of Clovers Studio, Kamiya is actively working on a sequel to Okami, an announcement that has garnered significant excitement within the eShop and Nintendo Switch communities.
Kamiya’s openness to revisiting his legacy titles such as Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe signals enduring enthusiasm for both his earlier and current works.
While the decision rests with Capcom, Kamiya’s creative vision and influential track record place him in a strong position to bring these beloved franchises to a new generation of players—potentially via modern hardware platforms like the Nintendo Switch and beyond.
As Clovers Studio focuses on delivering highly anticipated experiences, the gaming community awaits further announcements and continues to celebrate Kamiya’s ongoing contributions to the industry.
