In a major announcement coinciding with QuakeCon, id Software and Nightdive Studios have launched Heretic + Hexen for Nintendo Switch, marking the definitive return of these groundbreaking dark fantasy shooters.
Originally developed by Raven Software and released in 1994 and 1995, Heretic and Hexen not only expanded the horizons of first-person shooters but introduced innovative mechanics such as inventory systems, vertical aiming, and unique character classes—elements that have since become staples within the genre.
Now remastered by Nightdive Studios in collaboration with id Software, Heretic + Hexen arrives on the Nintendo eShop for $14.99, bringing together restored classic content and fresh new experiences.
The digital release is available today, with a physical edition planned through Limited Run Games.
The collection includes the foundational adventures Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, and the challenging expansion Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel.
Taking the package further, two brand-new episodes have been introduced: Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur, developed in tandem with id Software and Nightdive Studios.
These episodes extend the rich narrative tapestry and promise new arenas for both returning fans and first-time players.
Fans can expect a treasure trove of content, featuring a staggering 117 campaign maps and 120 deathmatch maps across the included titles.
Enhancements to this release cater to both competitive and cooperative play, offering online cross-platform matchmaking and local split-screen deathmatch and co-op modes.
Quality-of-life improvements, expanded accessibility options, and extensive in-game mod support further modernize these classic titles for today’s audience.
The remaster also features an upgraded Tome of Power soundtrack by composer Andrew Hulshult, with the option to toggle between classic and enhanced audio.
This addition underscores the attention to detail Nightdive Studios is known for in their restoration projects.
Heretic charts the struggle of the heroic Sidhe elf, defying dark sorcery and vengeance, while Hexen invites players to protect the realm of Cronos as a versatile roster of fighters against the formidable Serpent Riders.
With new storytelling elements, improved visuals, and expanded language offerings, the release widens accessibility to a new generation of players.
In an official statement, the development team underscored their commitment to honoring the original vision: "We worked closely to enhance these genre-defining experiences for both longtime devotees and new adventurers, ensuring every update preserves the spirit of the originals while elevating the gameplay and presentation to modern standards."
Heretic + Hexen is now available on Nintendo Switch, continuing the legacy of two cult classics that forever shifted the evolution of first-person shooters.
