Return to Blacktooth: A Head Over Heels Adventure has officially launched for Atari ST and Commodore Amiga, marking the public debut of a sequel that has been in development in one form or another for decades.

The release, announced on 5 May 2026, sees Thalamus Digital Publishing working with Atari to bring Colin Porch’s long-gestating project to two of the original target platforms, and it ships with a 25% launch discount that reduces the typical $12.99 price to $9.74 for a limited time.

Background and development

Head Over Heels, the original isometric arcade-adventure created by Jon Ritman and Bernie Drummond in the 1980s, appeared across home computers including the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Amiga and Atari ST.

Colin Porch, who handled the Atari ST conversion of the original game, has been developing Return to Blacktooth since 1989.

Thalamus Digital and Atari announced Porch’s sequel as a labour of love that preserves the spirit of the original while introducing modernised level design and mechanics.

Launch details and developer intent

Thalamus Digital confirmed the 5 May 2026 launch for Atari ST and Amiga and highlighted a temporary 25% discount at launch.

Porch communicated that the project has been a lifelong endeavour and that he deliberately built new rooms, puzzles and gameplay mechanics to retain the original game’s emphasis on logical, puzzle-driven challenges rather than reflex-based action.

He described the sequel as carefully balanced—difficult and devious where appropriate, but fundamentally fair to players.

Publisher perspective and platform plans

Thalamus founder and CEO Andy Roberts said the company pushed to reach fans of the original and worked closely with Atari to realise Porch’s vision, framing the release as a respectful continuation of a classic franchise.

The game is presented as a 3D isometric arcade-adventure with over 350 rooms across five worlds, two playable characters and 16-bit-level visuals tailored to its retro targets.

Thalamus has also indicated plans to port Return to Blacktooth to additional retro systems and modern formats, including Atari Jaguar, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, ZX Spectrum Next, as well as PC and unspecified consoles.

Historical context

Originally expected for 2025, the sequel missed that window but was confirmed for release and delivered to Amiga and Atari ST owners in May 2026.

For collectors and retro enthusiasts, this launch is notable both for its platform fidelity and for the unusual development timeline that stretches back more than three decades.

For purchase and availability information, consumers should consult Thalamus Digital and Atari channels for official storefronts and pricing details.
