In a hands-on preview hosted over the summer, Nintendo allowed press to sample the game’s 12 events and share first impressions of control fidelity, event design, and local multiplayer appeal.
At the outset of our preview, we asked whether the motion-focused “waggle” returns in force with this release; in journalistic terms: the preview examined whether Switch Sports Resort restores the tactile, responsive motion play that defined the Wii Sports era.
The answer from our session was largely affirmative — several events felt closer to the spirit of the Wii originals while taking advantage of Switch-era sensor precision.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort offers the following sports at launch:
- Archery
- Basketball
- Bowling
- Boxing
- Golf
- Power Cruising
- Prop Plane
- Skateboarding (New)
- Table Tennis
- Thumb Wrestling (New)
- Volleyball
The 12-event lineup blends returning favorites with newly designed activities.
Power Cruising, a water-racing event, impressed with smooth drift and intuitive Joy-Con handling; it’s a mellower alternative to older racing franchises such as Wave Race: Blue Storm.
Archery pairs a two-handed motion—drawing with one Joy-Con and aiming with the other—with an aiming reticle that limits automated assistance, keeping skill and positioning important for bullseyes.
Bowling proved a standout, echoing the original Wii Sports’ pick-up-and-play satisfaction while adding consistent spin and shot control through motion input.
Our preview noted that where Nintendo Switch Sports (2022) occasionally felt “off” in its motion feedback, Switch Sports Resort showed improved responsiveness and a more deliberate feel in key events.
A surprise highlight was Thumb Wrestling.
Initially written off as a novelty, the event translated surprisingly well to motion controls, offering intuitive inputs, a charge mechanic for stronger escapes, and a tangible risk–reward curve that rewards timing.
One consistent caveat: competitive events are most compelling with human opponents.
The single-player AI in our preview did not replicate the unpredictability and social entertainment value of local multiplayer.
The Joy-Con form factor is an ongoing contrast to the Wii Remote; however, attendees noted larger Joy-Con prototypes and refined motion detection contributed to stronger control fidelity in several events.
According to the preview session materials, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is scheduled to launch on October 22, 2026.
For fans of motion-controlled party games and anyone who remembers Wii Sports, Switch Sports Resort looks positioned to be a significant entry on the Nintendo Switch platform and a title to watch on the eShop and in future Nintendo Direct showcases.
