The franchise has a long history on Nintendo hardware — Mega Man 11 released on Nintendo Switch and other platforms in October 2018 and remains available via the Nintendo eShop — and Dual Override will be one of the more closely watched Capcom projects for action-platformer fans.
In a pair of Capcom-hosted hands-on preview sessions, journalists were able to play as both Mega Man (Rock) and Proto Man across three stages built around a new Robot Master, Twinkle Girl.
The sessions yielded detailed impressions of the game’s core systems: tight, responsive movement; expanded weapon and traversal abilities; and a new Override supercharge mechanic.
Rewriting notable impressions in journalistic terms: our play time found Mega Man’s controls to occupy a “Goldilocks” balance — not a carbon copy of the 8‑bit originals, but close enough that the character’s snappy feel and satisfying Mega Buster feedback evoke the classic games while working with modern 3D assets.
Capcom’s approach preserves the series’ trademark responsiveness while adding nuance through new abilities.
Preview-level content and features observed
- Stage design and collectibles: Each Twinkle Girl stage contains two large bolts as optional, hard-to-reach collectibles that reward exploration and mastery.
Locating them often requires mastering new movement and weapon abilities.
- New movement and weapons: Mega Man’s move set includes a charging dash that can damage foes and be used in midair to reach hidden areas.
These traversal tools expand the series’ exploration loop, similar in spirit to past Mega Man titles where new weapons opened previously inaccessible paths.
- Boss encounter and Override system: Twinkle Girl employs multi-directional fireworks shots, charges, and downward strikes.
Our playthroughs showed that timing the Override supercharge for later boss phases delivers a decisive power spike to finish the fight.
- Proto Man’s rework: Proto Man was presented as a close-quarters specialist with a retooled shield that can ricochet or absorb shots and serve offensively via a Proto Boomerang, Shield Jet ramming attack, and a Rising Shield uppercut.
To prevent overuse, Proto Man features an overheat cooldown tied to repeated shield attacks.
Capcom has not yet detailed additional Robot Masters, full stage list, or any amiibo functionality for Dual Override.
With a 2027 launch window confirmed at The Game Awards, Capcom is expected to reveal further information in the months ahead.
For Switch owners who enjoyed Mega Man 11 on the Nintendo eShop, Dual Override is shaping up to be a title worth watching as more details emerge.
