Dead of the Brain 2 PC-98 English Translation Revives Classic FairyTale Visual Novel

FairyTale's cult-classic visual novel Dead of the Brain 2, originally released in 1993 for the Japanese PC-98 home computer, has finally received a complete English language translation.

The translation, which has been highly anticipated by retro gaming enthusiasts and visual novel collectors, is now accessible thanks to the tireless efforts of the WINE translation group. Dead of the Brain 2 is the sequel to FairyTale’s original Dead of the Brain, known for its visceral horror, graphic depictions of gore, and mature themes.

While it is often regarded as less impactful than the first game, Dead of the Brain 2 remains a substantial part of visual novel history.

Before this translation, the majority of non-Japanese players could experience the game only through unofficial summaries or let’s plays, limiting their access to its infamous narrative twists and atmospheric storytelling.

With its arrival in English, international fans can now fully appreciate FairyTale's storytelling and artistry from the 1990s PC-98 era. The game's narrative continues directly after the events of Dead of the Brain, following protagonist Cole and his wife Sheila.

The couple initially seem to have survived the local undead outbreak, but a new threat quickly emerges when a biker gang incites chaos in town and a corpse is found in Cole’s own apartment.

Investigations soon reveal that Dr.

Cooger’s notorious 'resurrection medicine'—central to the first game's zombie disaster—was never truly eradicated.

These developments thrust players back into FairyTale’s grim universe, showcasing the developer’s signature blend of suspense and psychological horror. A statement on the game’s RHDI page highlights the dedication behind this project: the translated version, completed after nearly two years of waiting for a committed translator, opens new doors for appreciation and academic study.

The restoration not only benefits dedicated western fans of Japanese visual novels but also helps to archive and preserve a unique piece of gaming history. Notably, Dead of the Brain and its sequel saw a combined release on the PC Engine CD in 1999, marking one of the last games launched for the platform.

FairyTale concluded their 'Nightmare collection' the same year with Marine Phylt, after which the studio shifted its focus to creating adult visual novels.

A translated version of the first game's PC Engine release became available in 2023, further fueling global interest in the series and the developer’s catalog.
