Silent Hill 4: The Room Now Features Restored PS2 Content and Modern Controller Support on GOG
Konami’s cult-classic horror title Silent Hill 4: The Room has received significant preservation efforts as part of GOG’s Preservation Program, with the digital storefront announcing the addition of restored PS2 content and enhanced controller functionality.
The update, revealed by GOG on March 21, 2025, marks an important milestone for both Silent Hill fans and the broader movement towards classic game accessibility on modern platforms.
Originally released on PC in 2004, Silent Hill 4: The Room was quickly recognized for its unnerving atmosphere and distinctive narrative within the celebrated Silent Hill franchise.
However, fans long noted the absence of several haunting events in the PC version—memorable supernatural occurrences present in the original PlayStation 2 release.
This omission impacted the game’s unique horror ambiance and prompted community modders to develop unofficial fixes over the years.
GOG’s latest update addresses these long-standing disparities.
As part of the Preservation Program, the team worked to reintegrate the missing PS2 hauntings, restoring Silent Hill 4’s full suite of unsettling set pieces.
According to Adim Ziółkowski, GOG’s technical producer, the absent content had remained hidden in the PC game’s code.
"We discovered the missing hauntings were still within the existing code base, so the solution was to identify and reactivate those specific segments," Ziółkowski explained in a recent GOG update video.
This method allowed the development team to faithfully reintroduce the content, reaffirming the game’s original vision and atmosphere.
Additionally, the re-released version now supports modern controllers, including popular models such as Sony’s DualSense.
GOG has also implemented a hot-plugging feature, enabling players to seamlessly switch controllers during gameplay, along with improved vibration feedback for a more immersive experience.
These quality-of-life updates bring Silent Hill 4’s controls in line with current PC gaming standards and broaden accessibility for a new generation of players.
To commemorate the game’s addition to the Preservation Program, Silent Hill 4: The Room is available on GOG at a discounted price of £5.09 until April 3, 2025.
The Preservation Program itself highlights GOG’s ongoing dedication to conserving classic games—other recent library additions include Monolith’s F.E.A.R.
Platinum, several titles from the Ultima series, and the CRPG classic Fallout 2.
Silent Hill 4: The Room’s preservation is more than a technical update; it represents the increasing recognition of video game history and the importance of making essential titles playable on modern hardware.
For fans and preservationists alike, GOG’s latest initiative solidifies the digital storefront as a leader in accessible, authentic gaming experiences from the industry’s past.
