Fruitbus, the upcoming first-person adventure game from acclaimed Norwegian developer Krillbite Studio, is set to bring a fresh twist to the culinary gaming genre when it launches on Nintendo Switch in 2025.
Known for their narrative-driven titles "Among the Sleep" and "Mosaic," Krillbite Studio embarks on a new journey with Fruitbus, inviting players to explore a vibrant world while running an imaginative food truck business.
Unlike most cooking mini-games that tend to be overly simplistic or dauntingly complex, Fruitbus strikes a thoughtful balance between accessibility and depth.
Set amongst the sun-soaked islands of the Gustum archipelago, players take on the role of a budding chef seeking to revive their grandmother’s legacy by restoring her dilapidated food truck.
The game opens with players retrieving their rundown vehicle from a junkyard and embarking on a heartfelt mission: to honor their late grandmother with a grand feast for the local residents—while also settling some of her outstanding debts.
"Your grandmother left behind more than just a food truck; she also left some unsettled matters.
Players are encouraged to reconnect with her friends in the community, helping to mend relationships and bring everyone together," explained Martin Kvale, sound designer at Krillbite Studio, during a recent hands-on demo of Fruitbus.
Gameplay in Fruitbus is defined by its tangible, interactive approach.
Players must physically pick up ingredients, prepare dishes step-by-step, and actively manage every aspect of their mobile kitchen.
Each hand is controlled independently, requiring players to grab, chop, and serve using intuitive button mappings.
From foraging for tropical fruits on the islands to expanding the menu with new recipes and appliances, Fruitbus captures the joy of discovery while keeping food preparation engaging and freeform.
The game’s learning curve allows both beginners and experienced gamers to enjoy the experience at their own pace.
"Fruitbus adapts to your ambition.
Start simple, making bread and basic snacks, or pursue more intricate recipes to earn greater rewards from your island clientele.
New tools, equipment, and ways to carry ingredients become available as you progress, encouraging players to experiment and get creative," said Kvale.
The sense of immersion is heightened by physical elements, such as starting the truck engine, disengaging the handbrake, and navigating the lively and sometimes quirky landscapes of Banamas—a paradise full of memorable characters and surprising encounters.
Customization is a significant focus for Fruitbus.
Players can rearrange and decorate the interior and exterior of the truck, organizing kitchen equipment or choosing a color scheme that matches their style.
Beyond cooking, the islands offer side activities like fishing and community errands, enriching the overall adventure with diverse gameplay.
The audiovisual design gives Fruitbus a distinct personality; its vibrant, stylized world and expressive, puppet-like inhabitants are complemented by an upbeat, whimsical soundtrack.
Despite the simplicity of its visuals, the game’s atmosphere feels both welcoming and unique.
With its full release on Nintendo Switch scheduled for 2025, Fruitbus promises an innovative take on culinary adventure games, built on the proven creative strengths of Krillbite Studio.
As anticipation grows, Fruitbus stands out as an engaging experience for players eager to cook, explore, and connect in a charming virtual world.
