In a significant move against video game piracy, the FBI has seized the domain of NSW2U, one of the largest Nintendo Switch ROM sites, as well as several other similar websites.
These actions mark a decisive step in the long-standing effort to protect intellectual property and copyright in the gaming industry, especially as the Nintendo Switch continues to see record-breaking software sales and widespread popularity.
Concerns about illegal game distribution have loomed over digital storefronts and independent hosting sites since the rise of easily accessible ROMs.
NSW2U had become well-known on the internet for providing unauthorized copies of Nintendo Switch titles and other game software.
This week, the FBI officially confirmed that it had targeted multiple sites distributing pirated video games, acting on investigations carried out between February 28th and May 28th, 2025.
According to an official FBI statement, authorities observed that sites like NSW2U collectively tallied approximately 3.2 million illegal downloads over the course of the inquiry.
The agency estimated that this activity led to financial losses amounting to $170 million for Nintendo and other game publishers.
The ban goes beyond just NSW2U, with additional domains including nswdl.com, game-2u.com, bigngame.com, ps4pkg.com, ps4pkg.net, and mgnetu.com named as part of the enforcement action.
"As part of the actions announced today, the FBI has obtained authorization to seize the domain of multiple sites, to include nsw2u.com," the bureau's statement outlined.
It continued, explaining that these domains, which previously facilitated access to pirated games, now display a seizure banner indicating that federal authorities have taken control.
This public notice serves as both a deterrent and a warning to those involved in the illegal distribution or downloading of video game content.
While the challenge of curbing digital piracy remains ongoing across all entertainment sectors, the FBI's recent operation has made access to illegal Nintendo Switch games significantly more difficult.
The action reinforces the importance of using legitimate channels, such as the Nintendo eShop or authorized retailers, to purchase Switch titles.
Authorities and Nintendo alike continue to urge players to support developers and publishers by obtaining games legally, thereby ensuring that gaming’s creative ecosystem thrives.
The Nintendo Switch, which saw global lifetime hardware sales surpass 125 million units as reported by Nintendo in 2024, continues to be a leading force in the gaming market.
Protecting its software library remains a high priority for the company as well as for law enforcement agencies combating copyright infringement.
For now, the seizure of prominent ROM sites stands as a clear message: piracy, particularly of current-generation software like Nintendo Switch titles, is being targeted more aggressively than ever by federal authorities.
