Virtua Fighter Crossroads: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio Consulted Yu Suzuki on New Direction

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's Virtua Fighter Crossroads represents a deliberate shift for the long-running Sega fighting series, marrying traditional one-on-one combat with an action-adventure structure.

Revealed during Summer Games Fest, the title is scheduled for release in 2027 and expands the Virtua Fighter formula with an open, explorable urban setting — the fictional Southeast Asian city of Vilasapara — alongside classic versus modes.

Background and development

Virtua Fighter, created by Yu Suzuki and first released in arcades in 1993, established early 3D fighting mechanics that influenced the genre.

The new entry is being developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the Yakuza series, and incorporates a narrative-driven experience alongside competitive fighting.

The game's story is led by Ghost of Tsushima writer Brad Kane, with oversight from actor-writer David Hayter.

The Crossroads trailer also introduced new characters including Cielo Salinas and Stella Bridge, plus two unnamed fighters reported to replace long-standing series protagonist Akira.

Studio sought approval from series creator

In interviews published alongside the reveal, producer and creative director Riichiro Yamada said the development team wanted to ensure their departure from previous entries respected the series' legacy.

Yamada explained they presented the concept to Yu Suzuki to confirm the project's direction for a contemporary home console installment.

According to Yamada, Suzuki emphasized that a home console Virtua Fighter should invest in properly developing characters' backstories, and that guidance reassured the team they were proceeding correctly.

Yamada later elaborated on social media, noting he felt nervous presenting the concept to Suzuki given the creator's stature, and that Suzuki's positive response left him both relieved and energized.

He said the interaction briefly returned him to the excitement of his early days in the industry.

What we know and what remains open

Virtua Fighter Crossroads is confirmed for a 2027 release, and its hybrid design has drawn comparisons to both the Yakuza series and Yu Suzuki's Shenmue series for its blend of narrative and open-area exploration.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has not announced platforms or storefront plans; there has been no confirmation of a Nintendo Switch release, Nintendo Direct presentation, or eShop listing as of the Summer Games Fest reveal.

The project marks a notable milestone for the Virtua Fighter brand as it evolves under a studio known for story-driven action.

With an established release window and direct input from the series' creator, Crossroads is shaping up to be one of the more closely watched fighting-game experiments leading into 2027.
