Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2 Confirmed — Release, Early Access, and Subscription Details

Square Enix confirmed at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 that Final Fantasy XIV will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, with a planned digital release on the Nintendo eShop worldwide in August 2026.

The announcement, made during the event's Day 1 livestream, outlined launch timing, an early access window, and new subscription arrangements specific to the Switch 2 version.

Announcement and launch window

Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu opened the Fan Festival announcement by thanking players for their patience and revealing that Final Fantasy XIV Online will be supported on Nintendo’s next-generation hardware.

Director and producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed the team’s timetable, stating that the developer currently plans to launch the Switch 2 version in August 2026 and will begin with a short early access period of roughly one month.

Early access and pricing mechanics

Yoshida explained that the early access period will be used to ensure server stability and that during this trial month no Switch 2 version subscription fees will be collected.

After the early access window concludes, the full commercial service for the Switch 2 edition will commence.

Subscription policy changes for Switch 2

Historically, Final Fantasy XIV has required a single subscription for access across platforms once the game is purchased.

Yoshida said this has changed for the Switch 2 edition following extended discussions with Nintendo.

He noted that the Switch 2 release will require a separate subscription to play on that platform.

To offset that change, Square Enix confirmed two concessions: players will not need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to play Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2, and active Final Fantasy XIV subscribers on another platform will be eligible for a 50 percent discount on the Switch 2 subscription price.

Yoshida emphasized that players who only plan to play on Switch 2 will only need the Switch 2 game and its subscription.

Distribution and official channels

Square Enix stated the title will be distributed digitally via the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2.

The announcement was part of the Fan Festival 2026 livestream coverage, with reporting and context provided by industry journalist Alex Seedhouse, who has covered Nintendo for more than 16 years.

The Fan Festival confirmation gives the Nintendo Switch 2 a marquee MMORPG launch on a clear timeline: early access beginning ahead of an August 2026 worldwide eShop release, alongside platform-specific subscription arrangements clarified by Square Enix and Nintendo.
