Square Enix has officially confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on January 22, 2026, and the studio’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, is shedding light on what it took to adapt the acclaimed RPG for the next-generation handheld console.
The announcement marks a significant milestone in the relationship between Square Enix and Nintendo platforms, as the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series arrives for portable play following celebrated releases on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
In a recent interview with Nintendo Everything, Naoki Hamaguchi elaborated on the technical challenges faced by the development team during the porting process.
Hamaguchi explained that the pursuit of optimal portable performance was central to their efforts.
"One of our foremost goals was to ensure strong performance in handheld mode without making sacrifices in visual quality," Hamaguchi noted.
The team faced the issue of power consumption head-on, striving to deliver a seamless gameplay experience comparable to what players expected from the PlayStation version.
Hamaguchi went on to share insights from public demos at Gamescom and PAX West, where the game was showcased on the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
"The feedback from those events was overwhelmingly positive," he recounted.
To achieve such results, Square Enix's engineering team focused on advanced rendering optimizations.
These efforts paid off, allowing the game to maintain high-definition visuals and fluid animation that remain faithful to the original experience on PS4 and PS5 systems.
A key aspect of the adaptation involved preserving the emotional depth of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade's highly detailed character models and expressive animations, especially during portable play.
Hamaguchi detailed how the team scrutinized character expressions and visual fidelity, emphasizing the importance of precise lighting.
"We evaluated our lighting techniques from the PS5 release, then fine-tuned elements like post-processing effects and fog for the Switch 2, ensuring those emotional moments had their intended impact while sustaining solid performance," Hamaguchi said.
With the Nintendo Switch 2’s enhanced hardware, Square Enix is aiming to bridge the gap between home console and portable gaming for Final Fantasy fans.
As anticipation builds toward the January 22, 2026 release, this adaptation signals a new chapter for the role-playing genre on Nintendo’s next flagship console.
