Final Fantasy XIV, the acclaimed MMORPG from Square Enix, is preparing to celebrate its 12th anniversary in its critically successful rebooted form.
The game, a staple for MMO fans worldwide, has seen consistent demand for new console releases, with Nintendo Switch 2 emerging as one of the most-requested platforms among the gaming community.
At Gamescom, director Naoki Yoshida—widely recognized as Yoshi-P—offered new insights into the game's potential expansion onto Nintendo hardware.
During an interview with Video Games Chronicle (VGC), Yoshida confirmed that discussions between Square Enix and Nintendo regarding a Final Fantasy XIV port for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 system are ongoing and positive.
According to the director, "My goal is to make Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI available to as many players as possible.
The team is fully committed to making this a reality, so readers can be assured that we are viewing these possibilities very positively."
Since its original relaunch as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, the MMORPG has built a strong global player base, crossing millions of subscribers and earning critical acclaim for its engaging narrative and frequent content updates.
While the game is currently available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, and Mac, the arrival of Switch 2 could open its doors to a new demographic, introducing the beloved world of Eorzea to handheld players for the first time in the series' history.
Yoshida addressed some of the technical considerations for bringing the MMORPG to Nintendo's next-generation hybrid console.
He acknowledged that while the Switch 2 may not match the computational power of a PS5 or high-end PC—potentially affecting performance during graphically intense content like high-level raids—the device's portability could greatly enhance the player experience for more casual activities.
"With the Switch 2, players can comfortably enjoy gathering, crafting, or exploring the story while relaxing on the sofa or on the go," he noted, referencing the game's variety of combat, gathering, and crafting jobs.
Expanding Final Fantasy XIV to Switch 2 is seen by Yoshida as an opportunity to introduce a younger generation of players to the franchise.
He emphasized the appeal of a flexible gaming experience, where users can shift between challenging dungeons and relaxed gameplay modes.
Discussions with Nintendo, according to Yoshida, have been overwhelmingly positive: "We have been actively engaged with Nintendo, and our conversations have been productive.
We look forward to sharing good news with our player base in the future."
Yoshida has previously praised Nintendo's enduring impact on the industry—most recently highlighting The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom as essential play for aspiring developers.
As anticipation grows for official updates, both Square Enix and Nintendo Switch 2 stand poised to make a mark on the next chapter of Final Fantasy XIV.
Final Fantasy XIV continues to evolve, attracting newcomers and veterans alike across platforms.
