Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja have officially confirmed that Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on March 12, 2026.
The renowned survival horror title, first highlighted during the September Nintendo Direct, returned to the spotlight at Sony’s most recent State of Play, where the long-awaited release date was finally revealed.
In a statement from Koei Tecmo, the publisher announced that pre-orders are now available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series consoles.
However, Nintendo Switch 2 users will need to wait for a future date before they can reserve their copy, with the company stating that pre-orders for the Nintendo platform will become available at a later time.
The remake features significant enhancements in visual and audio fidelity.
The latest trailer showcases the eerie Minakami Village and its wraith-like denizens brought to life with new levels of atmospheric detail.
Gameplay innovations are also on offer: the Camera Obscura now includes focus, zoom, and filter functions, granting players a range of options to capture and confront spirits.
Another noteworthy addition is the ability for protagonist Mio to hold her twin sister Mayu’s hand, providing both health and spirit recovery, which deepens the emotional resonance and strategy during tense exploration.
For the Nintendo Switch 2, the official Fatal Frame website confirms that the game will run at 1080p resolution with a steady 30 frames per second.
While this version does not support HDR, it offers exclusive gyro aiming controls for the Camera Obscura in handheld mode, taking advantage of the platform’s motion capabilities to enhance the horror experience.
At launch, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake will be available in both standard and Digital Deluxe editions.
The deluxe version includes a digital artbook, soundtrack, and extra costumes for both Mio and Mayu, providing added value for dedicated fans.
Players around the world have celebrated the series’ return to modern systems, with Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja once again revitalizing a classic Japanese horror adventure for a new generation.
Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly originally debuted on the PlayStation 2 and is often cited as one of the most influential entries in the survival horror genre.
With its return on Nintendo Switch 2 and other contemporary platforms, the remake is poised to reintroduce its haunting narrative and signature gameplay to longtime followers and newcomers alike.
