Description

Renowned for breathing new life into classic NES games, solo developer Infidelity has recently released a reimagined Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) port of the iconic boxing title, Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!.

Debuting his original SNES adaptation in March 2024, Infidelity has returned to the project with a "from-the-ground-up" rebuild, introducing a suite of modern enhancements and features that redefine the playing experience for retro gaming fans. At the forefront of this release are MSU-1 enhancements, which bring full-motion video (FMV) style introductions to Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! on SNES.

The revitalized intro showcases actual footage of Mike Tyson delivering knockouts, adding a cinematic flair previously unseen on the classic hardware.

Furthermore, the MSU-1 chip allows for a complete rip of the original 1987 soundtrack, ensuring players enjoy uninterrupted music playback—a substantial upgrade over the original hardware's limited audio capabilities.

However, to experience these MSU-1 enhancements as intended, gamers must use SNES flashcarts equipped with MSU-1 support or run compatible emulators. Another landmark addition is rumble support, which delivers tactile feedback to players during pivotal moments in the game.

This feature comes courtesy of technical insights from Randal Linden, famed for his work on the DOOM SNES 2025 project.

Rumble functionality is currently compatible with emulators such as Mesen and Ares, as well as on the MiSTer FPGA platform.

Notably, SNES hardware enthusiasts can also tap into this feature using the Blue-Retro adapter.

Infidelity has personally tested the rumble integration on an SNES with a prototype of Limited Run Games' upcoming SNES rumble controller and on Mesen using an Xbox One controller via USB, underscoring the project's commitment to authentic retro play. The port's new custom save engine marks another quality-of-life innovation.

Players can now utilize eight save slots, a major convenience over the original game's save limitations.

The system meticulously records player progress, capturing data such as wins, losses, knockouts, and the specific time, round, and score at which each opponent was defeated.

According to Infidelity's release notes, this feature is intended to both assist novice players and offer completionists a detailed record of their boxing achievements. Infidelity's SNES port of Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! is already drawing significant attention within the retro community, both for its technical prowess and its fidelity to the original spirit of the iconic boxing game.

By combining MSU-1 audio-visual enhancements, immersive rumble feedback, and an advanced save system, this definitive release stands as a testament to the enduring appeal and innovation thriving in the fan-driven, retro gaming development scene.
