The Japanese video game market continues to demonstrate impressive vitality, with new releases achieving notable sales milestones in the latest weekly software chart.
According to data sourced from Famitsu, both Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 platforms saw strong performances, driven by the release of several high-profile titles and special editions.
At the top of this week’s rankings, 'Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater' for the PlayStation 5 debuted with 63,585 units sold, securing the leading position in its launch week.
Konami’s latest reimagining of their iconic stealth-action franchise has generated significant anticipation, and these early sales figures reflect strong interest from Japanese players.
Hot on its heels, 'Super Robot Wars Y' for Nintendo Switch entered the chart with an impressive 60,532 copies sold.
The title also saw an additional 30,969 units sold on PlayStation 5, demonstrating multi-platform appeal for Bandai Namco’s enduring strategy RPG series.
Meanwhile, 'Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar,' the newest entry from Marvelous, opened strongly on Nintendo Switch with 46,586 copies sold, and its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition garnered an additional 18,148 units, highlighting healthy demand for the farming simulation genre.
A notable entry at number four is 'Mario Kart World' on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, moving 35,185 units upon release.
The continued popularity of the Mario Kart franchise—already demonstrated by the evergreen performance of 'Mario Kart 8 Deluxe' (selling over 6.4 million units cumulatively in Japan)—underscores Nintendo’s sustained software dominance on both current and next-generation platforms.
Other highlights in the top ten include the debut of 'Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World,' which sold 12,174 units, and 'Donkey Kong Bananza,' which added another 10,440 copies to its now impressive total of 286,119 units since release.
Further down the chart, perennial favorites continue to demonstrate remarkable longevity.
'Minecraft' for Nintendo Switch has surpassed 3.98 million units sold in Japan, while 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons' maintains its stellar momentum, adding to a current total that exceeds 8.2 million units sold since launch.
'Ring Fit Adventure' and 'Splatoon 3' also contribute to the impressive ecosystem of top-performing titles on the platform.
Reflecting on these results, an industry spokesperson noted that "the dual strength of new releases and evergreen titles is testament to both the developers’ commitment to quality and the loyalty of the Japanese gaming community.”
As the Japanese market welcomes new hardware iterations and celebrated franchise entries, strong early sales numbers reaffirm that demand for both innovative experiences and beloved properties remains exceptionally robust.
