Nintendo Switch 2 Leads Japanese Hardware Sales; Mario Kart World Continues Dominance in Famitsu Charts
The Japanese video game market continues to show strong performance for Nintendo, with the latest Famitsu hardware and software sales data underscoring the enduring appeal of the company’s consoles and first-party titles.
Nintendo Switch 2, the latest iteration in Nintendo's successful hybrid console series, took the top spot in hardware sales for the week, reinforcing the brand's prominent position in the competitive Japanese gaming landscape.
According to Famitsu’s most recent figures, Nintendo Switch 2 sold 44,278 units, outpacing its peers by a significant margin.
The Switch OLED model followed with 10,568 units sold, while Switch Lite and the original Switch tallied 5,606 and 2,875 units respectively.
Combined, the Nintendo Switch family continues to demonstrate robust demand in the region.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 trailed behind, with 10,515 standard and 9,199 digital edition units sold, while the PS5 Pro moved 1,989 units.
On the Microsoft front, the Xbox Series X managed 51 units, with the digital edition of the Series S and its standard version coming in at 47 and 27 units, respectively.
The legacy PlayStation 4, though nearing the end of its lifecycle, saw 13 units sold.
These numbers highlight a marginal decrease in overall hardware sales for most consoles compared to the previous week.
For example, the Nintendo Switch 2 shifted 46,403 units last week compared to this week’s 44,278.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 also saw a decrease from 22,247 units to 10,515 units week-over-week, reflecting standard fluctuations in market demand.
On the software side, Nintendo’s flagship franchises continue to reign supreme.
"Mario Kart World" for Nintendo Switch sold an impressive 38,026 copies for the week, with a cumulative total surpassing 1.73 million units.
The newly released "Borderlands 4" for PlayStation 5 attracted attention as the top debut title, moving 13,029 units.
"Donkey Kong Bananza" for Nintendo Switch 2 maintained solid momentum, selling 10,577 copies and boasting lifetime sales of over 307,000.
Other Nintendo Switch titles, such as "Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar" and "Minecraft," also performed well, with weekly sales of 8,547 and 5,539 units respectively.
Notably, long-running hits like "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" continue to move substantial numbers, achieving an additional 4,012 units sold and maintaining a staggering lifetime total of over 6.44 million copies, according to Famitsu’s verified data.
The strong showing in both hardware and software encapsulates Nintendo’s sustained leadership in Japan’s gaming market.
These results also reflect the enduring popularity of the company’s flagship series and the robust ecosystem maintained on the Nintendo Switch and its successor.
For game developers and publishers, Japan remains a key market where Nintendo’s platforms consistently offer significant opportunities for both new releases and legacy titles.
Industry watchers expect further insights as new sales data emerges, but for now, Nintendo’s momentum appears firmly intact, driven by its innovative hardware lineup and beloved franchises.
