The latest Famitsu sales data for Japan offers a compelling snapshot of the gaming market, with hardware and software giants Nintendo and PlayStation once again leading the charge.
This week's charts underscore the continued popularity of the Nintendo Switch 2 and the impressive debuts for major software titles, including Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Ghost of Yotei.
**Nintendo Switch 2 Maintains Top Spot in Hardware Sales**
According to Famitsu's most recent report, the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to outpace its competitors with 44,439 units sold in the past week.
This performance slightly improves upon last week's total of 44,150 units, reaffirming the platform's robust standing in Japan's console market.
Plus, both the Switch OLED (15,075 units) and Switch Lite (7,024 units) demonstrated strong sales, reflecting the resilience and appeal of the wider Switch family.
The original Nintendo Switch model also contributed to the tally, with 2,010 units registered.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 is in second place, with combined sales of the standard edition (20,617 units), Digital Edition (4,285 units), and PS5 Pro (2,442 units).
This marks a notable rise for the standard PS5, which sold 11,597 units the previous week.
Meanwhile, Microsoft's Xbox Series platforms continue to trail, with combined sales for Series X (649 units and 106 units) and Series S (82 units) remaining modest.
PlayStation 4, having largely ceded market ground to its successors, saw only 19 units sold.
**Software Chart Highlights: Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Ghost of Yotei Make Impactful Debuts**
On the software front, new releases sparked significant excitement among Japanese gamers.
Leading the chart, PlayStation 5's Ghost of Yotei debuted strongly with 120,196 copies sold.
Nintendo Switch 2 followed closely, bolstered by the launch of Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, which collectively sold 48,265 units in their first week.
Other major debuts include Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Deluxe Edition, which saw robust performance across both Nintendo Switch (41,333 units) and PlayStation 5 (24,138 units), as well as Switch 2 (12,363 units).
Mario Kart World on Switch 2 continues its stellar run, adding 36,572 copies this week to reach a cumulative total of 1,837,895 units since release.
Rounding out the top 10 are titles such as Digimon Story Time Stranger (PS5 - 23,779 units), Silent Hill f (PS5 - 9,328 units, bringing its total to 66,803), Donkey Kong Bananza (Switch 2 - 6,839 units and a cumulative 334,335), and perennial favorite Minecraft (Nintendo Switch - 5,430 units, with an impressive lifetime total of 4,018,110 in Japan).
**Market Context and Industry Impact**
These results underline Nintendo's enduring dominance in the domestic hardware market, thanks in part to its multi-tiered approach with Switch 2, OLED, Lite, and the legacy Switch.
The successful launch of prominent software titles like Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the consistent draw of Mario Kart World reinforce the company's ability to sustain momentum with both new and long-running franchises.
Meanwhile, PlayStation 5’s uptick in sales and multiple software chart toppers highlight Sony’s resilience and ongoing appeal among Japanese gamers.
The industry’s competitive landscape is thriving, with new launches driving weekly shifts and engaging a diverse audience.
