Nintendo’s momentum in Japan continues undeterred as the latest hardware and software sales charts, published by Famitsu, affirm the Nintendo Switch 2’s commanding presence among Japanese gamers.

With the recent release of high-profile Nintendo titles and ongoing demand for its versatile consoles, Nintendo demonstrates its enduring appeal in a fiercely competitive market. According to Famitsu’s most recent data, the Nintendo Switch 2 has achieved remarkable weekly hardware sales, with 152,165 units sold in the latest reporting period—more than doubling the previous week’s figure of 71,885 units.

The Switch OLED and Switch Lite also contributed steady numbers, selling 5,207 and 4,276 units respectively.

Meanwhile, legacy Switch models recorded sales of 2,283 units.

In comparison, Sony’s PlayStation 5 tallied 3,635 units, while the PS5 Pro and PS5 Digital Edition followed with 1,664 and 849 units sold.

Microsoft’s Xbox family continues to face challenges in Japan, with the Xbox Series X and Series S reporting minimal sales of 61 and 59 units, and just 30 units for the Xbox Series X Digital Edition.

The venerable PlayStation 4 managed 22 units in the same period. For context, these numbers represent a robust uptick for the Switch 2, which effectively doubled its previous week’s sales.

Other platforms remained relatively stable or experienced slight declines, underlining Nintendo’s current grip on the Japanese gaming hardware scene. On the software front, Nintendo’s dominance is equally evident.

Topping the charts, Mario Kart World for Switch 2 captured 130,537 sales this week, bringing its cumulative total to an impressive 1,495,609 units.

Donkey Kong Bananza for Switch 2 made a strong debut at number two with 127,905 copies sold.

Other consistent performers include Tamagotchi Plaza (both on Switch and Switch 2), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the latter maintaining its perennial popularity with over 8 million units sold to date. Additional highlights in the top ten include Super Mario Party Jamboree, Minecraft, and the new release Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact.

The persistent sales of evergreen titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe—now over 6.3 million units sold in Japan alone—further underscore Nintendo’s effective game catalog strategy and its critical role in hardware adoption. A spokesperson for Famitsu acknowledged the significance of the Switch 2’s sales surge, emphasizing that ongoing first-party releases and strong brand loyalty continue to drive consumer demand in Japan. For those tracking the Japanese gaming market, these sales figures once again reinforce Nintendo’s leadership in both hardware and software categories.

With continued support from flagship franchises and consistent system updates, the Switch 2 is positioned to remain the core of Japanese gaming households for the foreseeable future.
