Nintendo's dominance in the Japanese gaming market remains strong, with fresh data from Famitsu highlighting another standout week for the Nintendo Switch platform.

The latest hardware sales figures showcase the enduring popularity of the Switch OLED, while the software charts are headlined by the highly anticipated release of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time. According to Famitsu’s weekly report, for the week ending June 30, 2024, the Nintendo Switch OLED once again led hardware sales in Japan, moving 15,349 units.

Following closely were the Switch Lite at 6,902 units and the standard Nintendo Switch at 2,038 units.

Together, these sales affirm the platform’s widespread appeal among Japanese gamers. On the PlayStation front, the PlayStation 5 sold 3,832 units, with the newer PS5 Pro model adding another 2,119 units and the PS5 Digital Edition contributing 787 units.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series S and Series X digital models registered 197 and 101 units respectively, while the standard Xbox Series X sold 72 units.

The PlayStation 4, despite its advanced age, saw a modest 25 units sold. Comparing these numbers to the previous week, Switch OLED sales saw an uptick from 14,460 units, while Switch Lite moved down slightly from 7,924 units.

The PlayStation 5 family managed to increase its weekly total, but Nintendo continues to hold a significant lead in both hardware and software sales within the region. Turning to software, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time made an impressive debut, securing the top spot with 82,968 copies sold on the Nintendo Switch.

This new title, developed by LEVEL-5, has generated considerable interest, highlighting the continued success of Japanese-developed role-playing games on the platform.

The PlayStation 5 version launched in third place with 10,730 units sold, further underscoring the title’s broad appeal. Other notable releases on the software charts include Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Battle Destiny Remastered for the Switch at number two with 26,130 units, and Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana with 5,596 units, also a new entry for the week.

Perennial bestsellers like Minecraft, Nintendo Switch Sports, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons continue to demonstrate enduring popularity, each posting impressive cumulative lifetime sales figures in Japan. This week’s sales data, provided by Famitsu, reinforces Nintendo’s commanding position in the Japanese market, particularly with the Switch family dominating both hardware and the eShop’s software sales rankings.

With consistent performance and strong new releases such as Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, the Nintendo Switch’s influence shows little sign of waning in 2024.
