Nintendo Switch 2 Leads Japanese Hardware Sales: Famitsu Charts Reveal Surge in Demand

In the latest Famitsu sales report, the Nintendo Switch 2 has solidified its position as the leading hardware in the Japanese market, further extending the company's dominance in console sales.

According to Famitsu, for the most recent week, Switch 2 sold an impressive 313,838 units—a substantial jump from its prior week’s sales of 200,257 units.

This surge outpaces all rival consoles, including strong showings from the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which recorded 36,856 unit sales, and the Switch Lite and Switch OLED, selling 18,460 and 16,916 units respectively.

Industry observers note that this swift climb in Switch 2 sales points to heightened demand following recent releases and continued consumer enthusiasm for Nintendo exclusives.

When compared to the previous week, nearly all Nintendo-branded hardware, including the Switch Lite and OLED models, saw increases in sales, a testament to the platform’s ongoing appeal.

Meanwhile, PlayStation 5 variants—including the PS5 and PS5 Pro—sold 6,033 and 3,864 units respectively, illustrating a healthy but smaller share of the market.

Xbox Series X and Series S also maintained a presence but at significantly reduced numbers, with the Xbox Series X Digital Edition selling 149 units, Xbox Series S at 103 units, and the standard Series X at 29 units. On the software front, the Nintendo Switch 2 continued to assert its influence.

'Mario Kart World' on Switch 2 led the software charts with 92,869 units sold in the last week, pushing its cumulative sales to an impressive 2,761,250 units.

Other notable performers included 'Momotaro Dentetsu 2' (Switch version), which added 61,588 units to a total of 294,142 sold, and its Switch 2 Edition, contributing 52,848 units for 241,383 total units sold.

'Pokemon Legends: Z-A' delivered strong results across both the Switch 2 (52,360 units sold, 1,056,514 total) and base Switch platforms (47,840 units sold, 1,577,663 total).

The mid-chart is highlighted by the debut of 'Kirby Air Riders' on the Switch 2, moving 47,712 units in the week for a running total of 472,549.

The enduring popularity of established titles was proven by 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons' on Switch, which sold 22,944 copies for a lifetime total surpassing 8.33 million units, and 'Minecraft' on Switch, with 18,843 units for over 4.1 million total sales. A Nintendo representative previously articulated the company’s commitment to "consistent innovation and engaging experiences for players of all ages"—a strategy evident in both the hardware's popularity and the software charts’ dominance.
