Nintendo Switch 2 Maintains Lead in Japanese Hardware Sales, According to Latest Famitsu Charts

Nintendo has once again solidified its dominance in the Japanese gaming market, with the Nintendo Switch 2 leading the latest hardware sales according to new data from Famitsu.

As the newest addition to Nintendo's console lineup, the Switch 2 continues the momentum established by its predecessors, further cementing Nintendo's legacy in both hardware and software excellence.

For the week under review, Famitsu reports that the Nintendo Switch 2 sold an impressive 97,677 units, greatly surpassing its closest competitor, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which moved 17,491 units.

Also notable in the rankings are the Switch OLED (16,004 units), the PlayStation 5 Pro (15,736 units), and the Switch Lite (12,896 units).

The original Switch model maintained respectable numbers at 6,427 units, underscoring continued demand across Nintendo's platform range. A comparison with the previous week's sales figures highlights some fluctuations.

The Switch 2, which posted 129,953 units in the prior week, experienced a typical post-launch adjustment; however, its current numbers remain well above key rivals.

PlayStation 5 Digital Edition was also down from last week's 23,381 units, while the Switch OLED showed a slight increase.

Xbox hardware continues to struggle in the Japanese market, with the Series X Digital Edition moving just 64 units, the Series S at 56 units, and the standard Series X with 52 units.

Meanwhile, PlayStation 4 saw minimal activity with 13 units sold. Turning to software, Nintendo platforms dominate the top charts.

'Mario Kart World' for Switch 2 once again led with 49,586 copies sold this week, bringing its lifetime sales in Japan to over 2.25 million—a testament to the enduring popularity of the franchise.

Close behind was 'Kirby Air Riders' for Switch 2, which achieved 46,287 units for the week and cumulative sales of 241,881.

'Pokemon Legends: Z-A' also maintained strong numbers, splitting its tally between the standard Nintendo Switch (35,225 units; total 1,306,801) and the Switch 2 edition (20,031 units; total 818,046). The charts further highlight the healthy demand for both new titles and legacy releases on Nintendo hardware.

'Momotaro Dentetsu 2' performed well across both Switch and Switch 2 variations, while 'Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment' and the long-lived 'Minecraft' on Nintendo Switch continued to secure positions within the top ten.

Rounding out the list are 'Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake' and 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons,' the latter boasting a remarkable 8.26 million sales to date in Japan alone. Speaking in an aggregated statement, Famitsu editors summarized the week by noting that, "Nintendo remains the dominant force in the Japanese hardware and software sectors, with the Switch 2 further extending the brand's appeal to both new and returning audiences.

Success across flagship franchises like Mario Kart, Kirby, and Pokemon continues to drive robust platform sales and ecosystem engagement." Nintendo’s continued triumph in Japan is especially significant as it heads into the crucial mid-year period, reinforced by strong sales on both the physical and digital fronts via the Nintendo eShop.

With evergreen software franchises and consistently strong hardware performance, Nintendo is poised to retain its leadership in the Japanese gaming landscape for the foreseeable future.
