Nintendo Switch 2 Leads Japan Hardware Sales as Mario Kart World and Animal Crossing Dominate Software Charts

Nintendo's dominance in the Japanese hardware market shows no signs of waning, as the latest Famitsu sales charts for the week reveal the Nintendo Switch 2 leading all hardware platforms, closely followed by variant models and high-profile titles topping the software rankings.

According to data provided by Famitsu, the Nintendo Switch 2 sold 69,586 units this week, outpacing competitors such as the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which reached 5,803 units, and both Switch OLED and Switch Lite models, which recorded 4,526 and 4,462 units sold respectively.

The standard PlayStation 5 tallied 3,575 units, while the PS5 Pro achieved 1,571 units.

Microsoft's Xbox Series platforms continued to chart lower, with 389 units sold for the Xbox Series X Digital Edition and even fewer for the Series S and Series X retail editions. For context, hardware sales from the previous week indicated a minor dip for Nintendo Switch 2, which previously sold 72,086 units.

Hardware trends also showed higher sales for Switch Lite last week at 8,577 units and a stronger performance for both the standard Switch and Switch OLED.

The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, in contrast, saw a modest increase from last week’s 5,524 units. On the software side, demand for Nintendo titles remains exceptionally strong.

The PlayStation 5-exclusive Code Vein 2 debuted at number one with 14,452 units sold.

However, the Nintendo Switch 2 title Mario Kart World followed close behind, selling 12,445 copies this week and bringing its cumulative sales to an impressive 2,805,146 units.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition also posted robust results at 9,941 units for the week and 52,918 total sales, while the original Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Nintendo Switch added another 9,042 units to its enormous lifetime tally of 8,362,221. Other notable entries include Pokémon Legends: Z-A spread across both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 platforms, collectively staying strong in the charts.

Momotaro Dentetsu 2 and Kirby Air Riders, both for Switch 2, also made top ten appearances, underscoring Nintendo's continued prowess in software performance in the Japanese market.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade landed in ninth place among best-sellers, showing cross-platform appeal from major third-party publishers. These figures from Famitsu demonstrate Nintendo's sustained dominance in the hardware marketplace and its robust game library securing ongoing engagement from Japanese consumers.

With Nintendo Switch 2 leading hardware sales and staple franchises like Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, and Pokémon holding steady in the software rankings, Nintendo’s position at the forefront of Japan’s gaming industry remains clear. For those tracking the evolution of the Japanese market, Famitsu’s weekly charts remain an essential resource for understanding both consumer trends and the competitive landscape.

As Nintendo continues to invest in both hardware innovation and blockbuster software, its foothold in its home market is unlikely to be challenged any time soon.
