Nintendo Switch 2 Dominates Japanese Hardware Sales as Animal Crossing: New Horizons Leads Software Charts

Nintendo continues to maintain a commanding presence in the Japanese gaming market, as reflected by the most recent hardware and software sales figures released by Famitsu.

At the forefront is the Nintendo Switch 2, which has substantially outperformed rival consoles and cemented its position as the preferred gaming platform among Japanese consumers. In the hardware sector, data from Famitsu for the latest reporting period shows the Nintendo Switch 2 achieving sales of 67,509 units.

Other Nintendo hardware also performed robustly, with the Switch Lite selling 12,686 units and the Switch OLED Edition reaching 8,631 units sold.

In comparison, Sony’s PlayStation 5 Digital Edition recorded 6,358 units sold, while its standard PS5 model reached 2,378 units, and the PS5 Pro garnered 1,247 sales.

Xbox hardware continued to trail in the Japanese market, with the Xbox Series X Digital Edition moving 230 units, Series S selling 50 units, and the Series X at 23 units.

The PlayStation 4, now a legacy platform, only registered 10 units sold. For additional context, the previous weekly report—covering a two-week period due to national holidays—saw an even higher performance for Nintendo, with Switch 2 sales surging to 313,838 units.

Other platforms experienced a similar boost, highlighting the significant impact of holiday shopping on hardware sales momentum. The software sales chart is equally dominated by Nintendo Switch releases.

Topping the list is 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition,' debuting with a strong 31,372 units sold.

Nintendo has consistently demonstrated software strength, with mainstays like 'Mario Kart World' remaining near the top—and now boasting a cumulative total nearing 2.8 million units.

'Pokemon Legends: Z-A' also maintains impressive sales across both the Switch and Switch 2 platforms, collectively contributing over 2.6 million copies sold for all versions. Other notable performers include 'Momotaro Dentetsu 2', which has strong showings across both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 editions, and 'Kirby Air Riders' for the Switch 2, registering 7,942 new sales for a cumulative total of just under half a million units.

'Minecraft' on Nintendo Switch reached 5,465 units this week, bringing its total to over 4.1 million since launch, underscoring the platform’s enduring appeal for global franchises. According to Famitsu’s collated data, Nintendo’s current hardware and software strategy has yielded dominant market results.

By continuously supporting both new and legacy hardware, alongside regularly releasing high-profile titles, Nintendo sustains its lead in Japan’s competitive gaming landscape.

With the Switch 2 achieving such high adoption rates, the company is poised to maintain upward momentum, especially as new software titles debut and the next wave of system updates arrives through Nintendo’s eShop and ongoing Nintendo Direct presentations. As verified by this week’s Famitsu charts, Nintendo’s strong ecosystem across Switch 2, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED models is driving the Japanese market.

The continued commercial success of flagship franchises such as Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, and Pokémon offers solid affirmation of Nintendo’s enduring relevance among both long-standing fans and new players alike.
