Ecco the Dolphin Remaster Officially Announced for Nintendo Switch: All Versions Confirmed

Sega's legendary aquatic adventure, Ecco the Dolphin, is making a highly anticipated return with a newly confirmed remaster for Nintendo Switch.

Featured in a recent two-page spread in Famitsu magazine, this classic title will soon allow both nostalgic fans and new players to experience one of the most iconic mascots from the 16-bit era in a modernized format. Ecco the Dolphin, originally developed for the Sega Genesis in 1992, quickly became a cult favorite thanks to its atmospheric gameplay, innovative mechanics, and environmental storytelling.

Over the years, it was ported to a range of platforms, including the Master Drive, Game Gear, and PC, further cementing its legacy as a standout entry in Sega’s library.

Now, with a remaster officially headed to Nintendo Switch, fans can expect to relive the magic of Ecco’s underwater journey with enhanced visuals and fresh features. In an interview with Famitsu, series creator Ed Annunziata stated that the main goal of this remaster is to give modern players—especially those who may not have completed the challenging original games—a chance to witness the finale of Ecco’s story.

Annunziata expressed a commitment to preserving Ecco’s diverse history, confirming that the remaster will include every major version: the 8-bit Master Drive/Game Gear release, the 16-bit Genesis/Sega CD edition, and the 32-bit PC variant.

These legacy versions will be bundled alongside the newly enhanced remaster, featuring redrawn artwork and high-resolution sprites, providing both authenticity and refinement. "We hope this new release will let both old and new fans truly experience every chapter of Ecco’s journey, with the best visuals possible," Annunziata conveyed in the interview, emphasizing Sega’s focus on accessibility and content completeness in the upcoming collection. While the current Famitsu coverage only confirms the Nintendo Switch as a release platform, earlier announcements—such as a 2025 feature on Xbox Wire—suggest a broader rollout across multiple current-generation systems.

The Nintendo eShop listing and additional platform confirmations are expected as launch nears, keeping anticipation high among the series’ dedicated fanbase. Annunziata also revealed that work is underway on additional new titles in the Ecco the Dolphin series, and encouraged fans to stay tuned for future updates.

Alongside the remaster of the original, rumors of a refreshed version of the celebrated Genesis sequel, Ecco: The Tides of Time, continue to circulate, though official details remain unconfirmed. With Ecco the Dolphin’s remaster on Nintendo Switch, Sega and Ed Annunziata are set to reintroduce one of gaming’s most unique franchises to a new generation, showcasing its enduring appeal and legacy in the evolving landscape of video game remakes.
