Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma Announced for Nintendo Switch – Release Date, Features, and Gameplay Highlights It has been four years since Rune Factory 5 arrived on the Nintendo Switch, expanding the celebrated blend of farming and RPG combat that the franchise is known for.

While the acclaimed Rune Factory 3 Special remaster kept fans engaged, the wait for a completely new adventure in the series has been a long one.

Now, Marvelous is set to deliver fresh excitement to fans with the official announcement and release date for Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, launching on Nintendo Switch and Steam on May 30, 2025. Officially unveiled during the August 2024 Nintendo Direct Indie World and Partner Showcase, Guardians of Azuma was initially introduced as Project Dragon.

Marvelous describes it as a "reimagined" Rune Factory experience, promising an innovative approach while remaining true to the franchise’s roots first established as a Story of Seasons spin-off.

Players will assume the roles of Subaru or Kagaya—childhood friends from the northern village of Azuma—each on a journey to restore vitality to their homeland, cursed with amnesia and destined to become the legendary Earth Dancer, tasked with saving Azuma and its people. Expanding the Core Rune Factory Experience Familiar elements such as romance, farming, and real-time combat make a return, but Guardians of Azuma introduces an expansive new world, fresh seasonal dynamics, and robust village-building features.

The adventure begins in Spring Village, a community afflicted by blight in the aftermath of the Celestial Collapse, a catastrophe that saw the gods and runes vanish from the land.

As players progress, they’ll unlock three additional villages—Summer, Autumn, and Winter—each with perpetual seasons.

This allows for continuous crop cultivation and seasonal activities, offering greater flexibility to veteran and new players alike. One of the standout innovations is the Village Building feature.

As you develop and customize the four villages, NPC residents become more involved—tending crops, mining resources, managing shops, and supporting the daily life of the settlements.

These improvements not only advance the story but also foster a dynamic, collaborative in-game community. Dynamic Dance Powers and Tactical Combat As the Earth Dancer, protagonists wield unique dance powers, each granting both agricultural and combat benefits.

For instance, the Sacred Drum accelerates crop growth and revitalizes withered plants, while also serving as a healing or enemy-repelling ability during battles.

The Sacred Sword and Sacred Parasol offer further versatility, yielding high-quality seeds in the fields and delivering potent attacks against enemies.

Notably, the Sacred Parasol can even be used to traverse hidden areas via gliding mechanics, streamlining exploration across Azuma’s varied landscapes. Combat offers enhanced tactics with the introduction of two new weapon types: bows enable precise ranged strikes, while talismans allow for homing attacks, especially effective against swift-moving foes.

Up to six characters may join the protagonist in combat—three active and three in reserve—facilitating diverse party strategies and adapting to shifting in-game challenges. Colorful Cast of Characters and New Community Bonds Fans of Rune Factory’s relationship systems will be pleased with a robust selection of bachelors and bachelorettes—players can even romance the alternate protagonist.

Key companions include Woobly, a devoted, sheep-like mascot; Hina, a half-human, half-fox archaeologist; Mauro, a sentimental treasure hunter; and Iroha, the passionate teahouse owner of Spring Village.

The roster is further enriched by gods representing the four seasons, led by Kanata, and unique leaders like Oni chieftain Kai and the formidable Clarice. Looking Ahead: Rune Factory Community Events Marvelous has also announced an upcoming “Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma Deep Dive Stream” set for January 22, offering an extended look at gameplay and additional insights directly from the development team.

The broadcast will include community giveaways exclusively for U.S.

fans. As anticipation builds for the next evolution of Rune Factory, Guardians of Azuma represents a promising chapter for both dedicated fans and JRPG newcomers.

With its captivating blend of new and familiar systems, May 2025 is shaping up to be a landmark moment for the Nintendo Switch and RPG audiences worldwide.
