Nintendo has officially unveiled new gameplay details for Kirby Air Riders, the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive from the celebrated partnership of Sora Ltd and Bandai Namco Studios.

In a recent Nintendo Direct dedicated to the title, director Masahiro Sakurai provided an in-depth look at its innovative mechanics, expanded character roster, and returning fan-favorite modes.

Kirby Air Riders is set for release on November 20, 2025, both at retail and digitally via the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2. Attendees of gamescom 2025 in Cologne, Germany, will be among the first worldwide to experience Kirby Air Riders through a hands-on demo available at booth A10/B09 in hall 9.1 from August 20 to August 24.

This premiere offers fans an early opportunity to try out the latest from Nintendo’s iconic Kirby series alongside other upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 titles. According to the Nintendo Direct presentation, Kirby Air Riders is a high-speed, vehicle-based action game with a focus on accessible controls and dynamic gameplay variety.

Sakurai outlined several new and enhanced features, including: **Riding Techniques:** Each Air Ride machine boasts unique forms and characteristics, automatically moving forward without requiring constant input.

Players steer using the left stick, with nuances in handling that differentiate each machine. **Boost Charge & Drifting:** Holding the B Button grounds the machine for a boost charge and activates a braking maneuver.

Releasing the button unleashes a Boost Dash, which can be combined with precise drifting around corners for advanced players seeking a speed advantage. **Special Abilities:** The Y Button triggers each character’s distinctive Special move.

By attacking rivals and filling the Special Gauge, players unlock powerful attacks.

Notably, Kirby distinguishes himself with four different Special moves, one for each playable color variant, adding a new layer of strategic play. **Strategic Rider Selection:** Rider selection is more impactful than ever, as each character—ranging from Kirby to Meta Knight, King Dedede, Bandana Waddle Dee, and classic enemies—has unique attributes affecting weight, durability, attack, and Specials.

Players can mix and match riders and machines for nuanced performance tailored to each race or environment. **Machines & Copy Abilities:** Air Ride machines are engineered for gliding, rail grinds, and stunts.

Players can manipulate machine altitude during jumps for speed bonuses, and all riders can utilize Kirby’s signature inhale ability to copy enemies' powers for temporary advantages. **City Trial Returns, Now on Skyah:** Sakurai highlighted the return of City Trial mode—described as the "main event"—transformed and expanded onto a vast floating island called Skyah.

In this mode, players freely explore, collect power-ups, attack opponents, and upgrade their machines within a set time limit, culminating in unique Stadium challenges tailored to their playstyle and in-game progress. **Multiplayer Experiences:** Kirby Air Riders supports local wireless play for up to eight players and online matches for up to sixteen.

GameChat integration enables video and voice communication for a more social multiplayer experience. The game further features classic Air Ride mode, in which up to six competitors race to the finish while gaining speed from attacking rivals and utilizing star trails.

A new Lessons mode is included to allow players to practice basic and advanced techniques, making the game accessible to all skill levels. With its November 20, 2025 launch date and a robust roster of characters, machines, and game modes, Kirby Air Riders is poised to set a new standard for party racing games on the Nintendo Switch 2.

As anticipation builds following Sakurai's detailed presentation and the hands-on debut at gamescom, it stands as a testament to Nintendo, Sora Ltd, and Bandai Namco Studios’ continued dedication to innovation and accessible fun.
