Earlier today, Nintendo of Japan streamed a dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation spotlighting the Nintendo 3DS edition of Dragon Quest XI.
As anticipation continues to build for the game's regional launch next month, this broadcast offered fans a deeper look at how the 3DS version sets itself apart, particularly with its innovative use of StreetPass functionality—a feature not available in the PlayStation 4 counterpart.
Official translations, provided by Gematsu, have helped clarify these newly revealed elements.
One of the standout features introduced is the acquisition of special creatures known as “Yocchi” via StreetPass.
Players can collect these creatures from nearby 3DS users and organize them into parties of up to eight to venture into an exclusive challenge area called the “Labyrinth Beyond Time.” Within this dungeon, players have the option to either manage their Yocchi teams manually or let them explore automatically, utilizing each creature’s unique strengths, weaknesses, and abilities for strategic advancement.
Importantly, although StreetPass significantly enhances your ability to collect Yocchi, the creatures will also appear throughout the game world, ensuring that players without frequent StreetPass connections can still experience the feature.
However, with the caveat that defeated Yocchi are permanently lost, avid collectors will likely want to amass as many as possible.
The Nintendo Direct also introduced an intriguing tie-in with Dragon Quest’s legacy.
Upon reaching the end of the Labyrinth Beyond Time and defeating its formidable Gate Keeper, players earn an Adventure Log.
This valuable item opens the door to classic worlds from previous Dragon Quest installments, allowing players to tackle new side quests closely linked with the Yocchi.
During the presentation, segments from Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest V were briefly showcased, highlighting the nostalgic depth awaiting series enthusiasts.
Japanese 3DS owners eager to dive in can pre-load Dragon Quest XI from the Nintendo eShop in preparation for its official release on July 29th.
As of now, this unique StreetPass functionality is exclusive to the 3DS iteration; there have been no new updates regarding the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI.
Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for further announcements as they become available.
With its distinctive features, integration of classic Dragon Quest content, and advanced use of Nintendo 3DS hardware capabilities, Dragon Quest XI for 3DS is shaping up to be a standout entry in Square Enix’s beloved RPG series.
